More Glass House Mountains but with some 4WD Action!

Thanks to a member of this board, I was able to meet a very cool 40 Series fanatic. We met up for a beer before the holidays and have kept in touch. This past Saturday he invited me to tag along for some passenger seat wheeling. Just what I needed to clear my blues after parting with the Bomb. :sombrero:

A group of guys were scheduled to meet up at a servo (service station) en route to the Glass House Mountains. I was riding shotgun in this cool 1984 BJ42, complete with power steering, 5 speed, 3B diesel, PTO winch and serious Simmex rubber. It's the blue one in the pictures. On the way we stopped to fill up on diesel and wait for another member to join us. He was at the wheel of a back 1975 40 Series Cruiser that had received a V6 engine converted to gas, 35" tires, lockers with low range reduction gears. Things were shaping up to deliver some very interesting wheeling. Here's where we ran into a bit of drama as they say. The old 3B was suffering from fuel delivery problems. Thankfully the driver of the black 40 happens to be a mechanic. After some troubleshooting, they found some air in the fuel system at the filter. The primed the system and bled the air out of the injectors. That got us about 100 m! We had to stop a few other times, with the same problem. We changed out the fuel filter, no luck. By passed separator #1, no luck finally bypassed separator #2, problem solved. We were sucking in air from separator #2 under load. Enough talking and time for a few photos.

One very well kitted out Hilux, I was really liking this rig mainly because it reminded me of my old Tacoma...

If that picture was not enough to make your drool, have a closer look...

Yes you read that correctly. Lexus V8 power, sweet sounding machine and lots of power to boot!

The bitumen ended at the Glass House Mountains look out where we stopped to air down. Two of the rigs, the black and silver 40 were running Staun internal beadlocks. From what I gather, they really like them. Both rigs were on 35" x 13.5" x 15 BFG Crawlers. One had 8" rims while the other had 10" rims. Made them look totally different.

Australian 4WD Action/Custom readers will recognize the silver 40. Here's a video of it in action compliments of 4WD Action.

Down the first hill, we had to turn arround because a few guys with some Nissan GQ's were trying to come up the track and were having lots of trouble. It looked like a really hard track going down, nevermind going up. Think competition grade tracks...

Once we got turned arround, we took another loop. At the bottom of one hill there was a section that caused you to rub up against the side of the track for about 50' or so.

Shot looking out at the end.
IMG_2104.jpg

The ground was still a bit damp in some sections due to recent rains making for some nice red puddles in the road...

Some of the views along the way.

Out to have a look at the track ahead.

Now this next hill proved to be too much of a challenge for the rigs that were not fully locked. The earth was this clay mixture that you could hardly stand on it was so slick. I went down to attach a satch strap but hardly made it back up!

Flexing out a bit.

The ruts were a bit too deep and the ground too slipery. Great effort though.

On the way back after turning arround.

The other rigs coming down afterwards because the track ahead was not passable.

Beautiful bar work on this Hilux. The guy who fabricated this does this as a hobby!

It was a great day and was my first ride in of of Toyota's off road icons, the 40 Series Landcruiser. Just made me want to buy one even more! :sombrero:

Nice pics P! Glad to see you getting out to have fun. Those rigs are something! I'd be quite happy with any one of them...even the V8 HiLux!

Pierre, we need way more threads like this from you. This thread and your "bomber" thread have made my week on Portal. :costumed-smiley-007

I have a soft spot for that Hilux, it was a real weapon off road as they say in these parts.

With regular net access and a functioning camera, I hope to provide a few more adventures for you!

If things really work in my favor, this Friday I'm off on a 1700 Km road trip to pick up a diesel 80 series I've had my eye on for the last 2 months! Keep your fingers crossed! :safari-rig:

My Wife & I were fortunate enough to visit the GlassHouse Mountains last year.
Her best friend got married up there.
Wish I could go back sometime in my 76Rangie.

Love the pictures and trail tail.

Thankyou very much.
