I Leak Oil

Coming from the Land Rover world I don't see why it's such a big deal that the speedo and gas gauge is upside down. Just accept it and move on. That's what we do....

a friend once bought an elcamino with the interior badges upside down, he got an incredible deal on it because of the mistake

It's so that you can start/stop the vehicle without taking the key/transponder widget out of your pocket.

Chrysler designers obviously haven't experienced pocket-emptying washboard roads!

Help me with something else: Door lock transponders generally aren't waterproof but if you have a real ignition key that locks the doors you can leave the transponder in the vehicle while out in the water. I'm thinking that if that's the case with the new Jeep transponder, you wouldn't be able to leave it in the vehicle with the top down because somebody could just climb in and drive off?

Probably.

Reminds me of a funny Top Gear scene where the by's are laid over for food in a restaurant. Jeremy and James wait for Hammond to be distracted and then one of them goes outside and drives his Challenger off and out of transponder range - where it promptly dies. Ended up being in the middle of the road in front of the restaurant.

Too funny.

I'm certain it was all staged but it does raise the point about vehicle security. I don't have any cars with this kind of start/stop technology so I don't know if there are configurable over rides or whatever.

The racing forum I am on is currently having a heated discussion about drive-by-wire and how it can interfere with driving the car.

Air bags in the hood for pedestrian safety seems a bit much and I'm a bit of a safety nazi.

I'm beginning to think that the electro-mechanical car peaked in the 2000-2010 time frame. Anything with transponders and drive-by-wire can be termed a computerised car. I'm not certain if I'm into that. I love the glass cockpit in cars like the Lexus LF-A and Ferrari 458 but other than that the rest seems to be more of a bother than anything.
