Mounting a small motorcycle to a JKU

So, I'm thinking about modifying an AEV swing away tire carrier to hold a small motorcycle (probably a honda ST clone, around 150lbs) I know the carrier would be fine with just the bike on it but I'm worried that the bike and a spare would be too much weight. I cook at the tailgate, so the weight would be hanging out there probably a couple of hours a day. I'm thinking my options are 1) to put both the spare and the bike on the back and cross my fingers that it doesn't start to sag immediately 2) try to find somewhere else to mount the spare, which may not even be a viable option. The only places on the jeep where there is space are the roof, hood, or side of the jeep, on the passenger side, covering the side window of the hard top. I'm assuming the hood wouldn't work, even with a narrow tire I'm sure visibility would be bad and the hood would need more support. The roof won't work because I have a fiberglass clamshell style roof tent that extends almost the full length of the roof. And I figure the side of the jeep is bad idea because its just waiting to get ripped off in a tight squeeze. or 3) Find a way to mount the bike to the front bumper, which probably wouldn't work because the seat would sit 10" higher than the hood.

I'm hoping the Heavy Duty Old Man Emu 2.5" suspension is up to the task , I only plan to run 33's. I don't want a hitch receiver carrier because I would have to take the bike off every time i wanted to get to the refrigerator or to cook or open the tailgate for anything. I suppose I could mount a hitch receiver carrier to the front but that would stick the bike way out there and totally screw my approach angle. I would really love to bring a bike along so we could explore small towns and stuff while traveling, and so we wouldn't have to break down camp just to run into town to grab a beer or something to eat. Also, I would love to have back up transportation in the event that I break down in the middle of the desert.

Anyone have any suggestions? Am I trying to have my cake and eat it too?
Heres a picture of my rig for reference

considering that a 37" tire plus a pintler beadlock is in the range of 130# as it is, plus AEV's 5 gallon fuel caddy (~50#) and a full HiLift at 35-40# depending - you're already at 220lbs hanging off the spindle. i would be willing to guess that AEV designed the tire carrier to have a 300# service weight, probably a max weight of around 500#.

i think you'd be ok, but the only real way to know is by contacting AEV themselves and asking them.

Thanks JDaPP! I've never seen one of those and with just a little bit of modification that would probably work for me. How sturdy does the latch seem to be? I cant find any close ups of the latch assembly.

Also, I did contact AEV and they wouldn't give me a weight rating, they would only tell me what it was designed to carry. When I asked again, they wanted to know what I was planning and told me that I should use a hitch mounted carrier. I'm sure it could probably hold the weight, but without a working weight range Im a bit nervous to commit to that plan.

It can hold a 40" tire so weigh that and the subtract the weight of you bike and tire. I bet a local shop that has a sample 40 mounted would let you weigh

It is very sturdy, and has a pin to keep it from opening. It also has a pin on the opposite side to ensure there are no accidental openings. I would think you would rip the tray off easier than getting the latch to break free. I will take a picture of it tomorrow.

Thanks, I had actually read that thread before I posted here. The problem with everything mentioned in that thread is that the bike would have to be dismounted every time I wanted in the back. ie: several times a day

I can't get pictures of the latch to load. Send me a PM with your email and I can email them to you.

Aside from the Versa haul, I think your solution would have to be custom made. I use a Harbor Freight one that is functional and very stable, but not the easiest to unload from. I added tail lights for it and just wired to the 4 pin plug.

It looks tilted b/c I have one of the tie downs hooked to the OEM tow hook.

I like the idea as I'm actually more into 2 wheels than 4, but like I said, you probably will be developing a custom solution for what you want.
