I am just going to give a well deserved shout it for what I believe to be one of the most innovative food items ever created. Am I talking about pizza? Nah, how about the sandwich? Nope. I'm talking about the Bruce Lee, Swiss Army Knife, Duct Tape, delicious awesomeness known as THE BURRITO!

Growing up in California I have been exposed to Mexican food from the get go, always loved it, and really have never burned out on it. I have packed in the goods to make tacos or burritos and such on camp trips, but it wasn't until last summer that my wife brought it up another level. It may sound stupid to some, but it has been a game changer for me on weekend trips. I really don't like packing a bunch of dishes, cleaning up dishes, paper plates and all that crap. Solution: Pre-made frozen burritos.

My wife will make a stack of delicious burritos wrapped in foil for the whole trip, including breakfast burritos, and freeze them the night before. Then we pack a small cooler with all the burritos, butter, cheese and any small items that need to stay cold. The burritos act as ice packs, and you can just throw them directly in the fire to warm up. All you have left to deal with is a piece of foil, which in my almost every case can be reused for something else later. When we are out wheeling and know we'll want one in the next half hour or so, we pull a couple and put them on the dash to start thawing out, then get a quick fire going at the next stop.

I am no authority on, well... anything I guess, but I can tell you this is an incredibly easy way to pack in meals for a few days without a mess, and it doubles up as ice for a small cooler.:sombrero:

Like the idea of freezing the burritos. I always make burritos for my trips great for breakfast and also make some for lunch/dinner, but never frozen them, gonna have to try that.

Rather than building a fire, why not use the heat source you already have? Your engine. The common term is manifold burritos. I buy frozen burritos, and double wrap them in foil, and throw them on the engine. Depending on ambient temps they can be warm to hot in a couple hours on the trail. I also have a Tacoma with the 3.4. I put them either behind the intake plenum, or in front, tucked in so they don't move. I have an idea to build a box to mount near the exhaust manifold to hold several safely, and heat them up more quickly. The Tacoma engine doesn't get as hot as the Jeep TJ engine does.

Love this idea! My X gets plenty hot with the supercharger so manifold heating these would be an excellent idea on the trail, especially during the months we're undergoing a fire ban.

We just made a cauldron of pulled beef for burritos/casadias/etc in our truck's microwave/convection oven. Then separate it into small batches and into freezer they go - very useful for quick meal later on. I know it's in a different league from camp fire, but still… :chef:

You can heat other items on the engine, as well. Look in the frozen foods section for ideas. I have done taquitos, and I just had a corn dog last weekend. Next is Chinese eggrolls. But the burrito still wins for all around utility.

You know, I have been trying to find those things for years... It is certainly a northern thing. We would use those cheapo aluminum small pots, and use a worm tightner to keep the lid on.

I am becoming a dealer for them in the near future. They are a northern thing, mostly used for snowmobiles. But they work great as they are sealed. You can cook chili or anything really. the other common name is the hotdogger.

I used a loaf pan and attached it to my firewall using a piano hinge and removable lid. This works great for warming frozen burritos, burgers and sandwichs.
