My diy bike stand

So, I fancy myself as a (limited ability) bike mechanic. That being said, I wanted a repair stand. Being that I just started grad school, I am very strapped in the cash department (I just see it as training for the rest of my life as an educator). So I did what any good slightly mechanically inclined person should do; I built my own stand.

I started with a good ol' google (bing, yahoo, whatever your flavor) search and found a plan I thought would be stable, cheap and bomb proof enough for me.

Then I decided to gather the parts and build it. I made one change, going with a pony clamp over a spring clamp.

Assembly went like clockwork. A pipe wrench and a spare set of hands (thanks Dad!) and I now have my own bike stand. I think it took a grand total of 15 minutes. I know it took me longer to gather all of the parts needed.

So, here is the finished product.

That's sweet, looks like it'll play. Not really all that different than a Park shop stand. Mount a heavy plywood board on the bottom and it'll be plenty stable.

The only thing I could critique would be the clamp. On commercial stands, even ones aimed at consumers, they are unlikely to dent or mar seat posts or even frame tubes. I'd be interested in seeing how people solve this issue in DIY situations, what sorts of clamps they use, pads, etc.

Reminds me of the DIY stand I made to mimic the Ultimate/Feedback A-frame stand. (you may have seen them, they're the ones with a few bikes hanging by their seats). I'll have to snap a photo, but it was 1/2" and 3/4" black pipe, a couple of 'T's, a couple of elbows. It's not even too tough to assemble, although nowhere as quick as the real thing.
