My New 1998 Montero

My new 1998 Montero (need a nickname for her...maybe "Goldy") parked in the foreground of the mountains she is waiting to explore. Just picked her up from a friend who bought her new (I helped bring her home from the dealer). The engine was just replaced; most everything is stock and works (apart from 31 inch tires and Driver side Sun-visor, Anyone got one they want to sell?).

I have been perusing the Forum and have enjoyed reading over the build threads of several of you with similar rigs. There was some great work done and perfect for ideas that I plan to add to my Monty in due course.

First step is new tires and Suspension. Suggestions welcome and appreciated!!

Goal for the Monty: Turn her into a great road trip truck for adventure on/off-road trips (Utah has a lot of everything) but using her to get there and get the kids/groceries on a daily basis.

Tires:
--It has 31inch tires on standard rims now. I think the look it good and the size is not bad. However, anyone have some good reasons to go bigger with new wheel/tire combo?
--If I keep standard wheel will have them powder coated black (saw someone else do this and liked it).

Suspension:
--First step is to replace shocks and springs. Goal: Provide a good on-road ride and limit body roll but also have ability to perform off-road
----ARB OME is a thought but was wondering if it is more off-road orientated and would not provide a limit body roll
----Local shop recommended combining Bilstein shocks with ARB OME Springs.

Any thoughts suggestions would be great.

Disclaimer: Will most likely ask dumb questions!

Nice score! I say wheel it until you find the need to do mods. No sense in throwing a ton of money into it unless necessary. I'm super jealous. :D

I say the same thing. How the heck do you know what you have until you take it off road and I don't mean some local playground. You'll be surprise how well it handles. I have modified mine, but only after abut six month of driving it on and off road including the Mojave road in stock dress (less running boards) with no problems.

Welcome aboard by the way. :)

Thanks for all the replies and the welcoming reception. Having lived down the street and been on numerous trips with this truck as the passenger, I know it needs a couple of things. The Tires need updating as there is are two cupped ones making the driving not all that enjoyable from the shimmy and the body roll is pretty good leading me to believe the shocks may be nearing end of life.

Hey welcome to Montero's world!! it's simply the best investment in an suv to have everything in just one vehicle. as you have noticed, it's simply smooth as a car on the road, comfortable, looks cool with every modification & fun enough when you go off roading!!! Here in Puerto Rico, people get crazy with them because the utility these suv's offers!!! I have two Dakar Editions, a white 97 and my baby, a 2000 in blue, with 32 and lifted almost 2 inches... I'm in loooooove with them!!! jejeje... If you notice on my Montero, Mitsubishi offered in Puerto Rico this edition with aluminum wheels, fenders and completly chromed grill

Has any one had any issues with the Horn going off in cold weather. When ever the temp goes below 30 degrees here in Park City and I go to start the Montero the horn starts going off and will not stop (Could disconnect the horns but kinda like to honk at people).

Any ideas?

Also, have installed new tires, waiting on suspension parts (will be installed in about two weeks), and waiting on TJM Snorkel.

Has any one used Rocky Road (http://www.rocky-road.com/index2.html)?
