Hello Mrs. Richere Adams:

You sent along a great photo of your two daughters and a friend walking on Long Point Beach to our Celebrating Canada photo contest.

As you are probably aware by now, your photo was not among the winning entries. However, we really loved the image, and we have been looking for an
opportunity to at least publish the image in our magazine at some point, so our readers can enjoy the photo, too.

However, as you originally submitted the photo to a contest, I wanted to check with you first.

We will send you a copy of the issue the photo appears in and also set you up a with a free one-year gift subscription to the magazine if you are happy for us to proceed.

It would appear in the July issue of More of Our Canada

This will come down to two viewpoints.

1. Your wife's photo is being used for commercial use in a magazine that makes millions of dollars and all they want to offer you is a free one year subscription?

2. Good for her. Make sure you get extra copies.

Both are right depending on your own view.

Only advice I will offer is to re-read the contest rules and check the section of copyright. Hopefully your wife did not give up copyright by entering the contest. If you decide to go ahead with them using it (no matter what the terms) be sure they print her name as the photogrpaher.

I agree with Photoman, it's a great big pat on the back to get the photo published, but man, that's one HUGE magazine that could at least pay for the use of the photo.

It just sucks in this day in age that the magazines dont pay more for the images they use.

Congrats to you and your wife, and the 3 girls in the photo.

Make sure the magazine gives your wife a photo credit. This has also become the norm for magazines. They use the image for free, and dont even give the photographer credit???

Congratulations to your wife.

X10 for what Photman and Pat said about getting paid and photographer "by line".

that photo embodies so much; youth, innocence, beauty, family, reminiscence. That is hard to capture and be authentic, it has class and intricacy. I love the light on the sand, the waves, the outfits and hair of the kids, their action, all so busy and determined, going out to the water, free from responsibility, the wood protruding from the sand, I can almost feel the breeze and hear the waves roll up on the beach, sand between my toes

very nice

I think your wife should merely ask to have her name mentioned or printed next to the photo

certainly the magazine could pay for it, but publishing and magazines in particular are suffering horribly financially. In the end it is about what is important to you, I would not ask for cash, just for her name followed by a thank you

Thank you so much she is very proud. Zooropa you actually made her cry. She is not worried about payment for this photo but has followed your advice on not giving rights and one time use only. Thank you for all the feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us such a wonderful moment. If anything we said moved you or your wife, it was inspired by her work.

Congratulations to you both and please continue to share your art with us. :)

if I may . . .

many people look at a photo for all of two seconds and take it or leave it. To me and many others photography is a time machine. It has depth and meaning, expression. The commentary here is kind of illustrative being that there is more focus on $$ than the dazzling light on the sand.

Was it late morning? or was the sun coming down I wonder. Were your hands full with sunblock, drinks, a bag, toys, a book etc? Did you happen to pull the camera out just at that moment? don't spoil it :)

I hope the photo rests some place where it can be viewed frequently in the house, so that you can look upon it for years and be proud of its subject and skill.

it captures the delicious heyday of youth, innocence, and I'm sure for you a special tenderness. Being a good parent is the hardest job in the world bar none, it requires all of you, completely. Nothing is more joyous or terrifying than parenthood. But you want to hold onto every moment, the good and the bad, time is so fleeting, it is easy to become melancholy if you try and hold on too tight.

so you relish every moment, and when it all comes together, you have a record, a picture whose meaning enhances the power of the senses and opens the imagination, something you can reflect on and share, a picture that will be enjoyed by others you will never meet but that will elicit the same wistful benevolence

edited for a spelling error d=(^^)z
