Ok, so I am trying to find out what this part is called, the vehicle in question is a 96 montero ls, it has a 3.0 engine(i assume, it says 3000 on it)

the part is what is right under the intake hose, center screen.

That would be the ISC which stands for "idle speed controller". Do not attempt to clean with carb or throttle body cleaner as it will destroy the thin diaphragm, and that little guy is around the $300. There is a way to test it, if you need help with that I will find it for you. I have it written down on my desk somewhere.
Good luck!

Thanks! I already know that part is the problem, I just did not know what it is called, and it is pretty tricky to buy a replacement part when you don't know what the part is called.

EDIT: could it also be called the Idle Air Controller Valve?

Yes, both IAC or ISC (Idle Air Controller or Idle Speed Controller) is correct. You can buy them on ebay for much less than that. I bought mine for $45:Wow1:.

You must be looking at a different picture. ;)

Underneath the intake hose center screen is the Idle Speed Controller, Idle Air Controller or sometimes referred to as the Idle Speed Servo. It raises the idle when the engine is cold or when an additional load like the AC compressor is placed on it.
