Nat Geo Backroads Explorer 3D

I just recieved a copy of National Geographic Back Roads Explorer 3D. It is an 18 CD program of TOPO maps for the entire US.

Has anyone ever used this program before?
What did you think or what have you heard about it?

Everything about it looks great but I just wanted to get a better idea before opening the box!

I've heard good things and bad things about it - apparently the interface is really clunky, and you can't get down quite as detailed as some of the other products in the series. But it is also the best (pretty much only) program of its kind available today.

Definitely keep us posted - I'm working on a HP Libretto based GPS/MP3 player/DVD player for my truck right now and will be needing to make this choice within the next few months.

EDIT - checked the reviews, and it seems that the Backroads one loses one level of zoom vs. the TOPO state editions. Consensus seems to be that this one is good for planning but for extensive trips you should get the state edition. I have no personal experience, and YMMV of course

Ozi Explorer looks to be about $125 and has a very dedicated following.

Also several GPS units come with thier own software...

If you order OziExplorer directly from their website its a little cheaper ($115):

$85 for the main program and $30 for the 3D add-on.

Ozi does not come with any maps, but topo's and aerial photographs for the US are freely available from several sources. Satellite images for the whole globe can be downloaded for free. You can also scan and calibrate your own maps.

Yeah, it looks like you loose the 7.5 minute detail. Too bad.

For just running around, I use the Garmin Topo basemaps on the GPS. When I really need to get some detail, the NG State programs are very effective.

I have just started using Ozi and like it. Much to learn, but I also have a good pal that is quite the master with it :ylsmoke:

I've been wanting to get a new gps for over a year now and sooner or later I will! When I do I'll make a solid decision on map programs but until then I don't have anything to download them into so I would just be looking on my pc at home.

Are you trying to trace your route with the "Pen" tool or are you using the "New GPS Route..." tool ?
