Nat-Geo TOPO! questions.

I run National Geographic TOPO! on my laptop (Dell Latitude C640) with a Garmin eTrex Legend GPS unit.

I don't have a huge hard drive in the laptop, so I carry all the disks with me instead of loading them into the hard drive.

If I copy my CDs to a flash drive, would that work ok, or should I go buy a bigger hard drive?

Hmmm I have not tried that. I would think it would work as long as the program knew where to look for the maps.

I am still bummed that they won't work on my Mac. It's one of the reasons the PC is still hanging out in the basement, that and my Garmin topos are PC only as well.

I run them off an SD card. Just install them onto your flash drive/card and you'll be fine. Takes less than 8gb (don't remember the exact amount though.

As an aside... since the program doesn't do a lot of writing to the drive they run fine off the flash card. Keep in mind that unlike computer RAM (computer memory) flash cards have a limited number of writes so this is why they're not recommended for app's that do a lot of read/writing to the flash card. SSD's (solid state disks) on the other hand are not flash memory so they don't have this problem.

I have a few different states, so a big flash drive would work well.

I have a 16G laying around that has digital copies of my factory service manuals, so that would be a great one to put the disks to.

No offense intended but I think you two didn't read or misread the original post. Otherwise, what does running it on a Mac matter to the OP's question about running it on a flash drive?

No they are simply following my high jack. Sorry. I mentioned that I cannot run it on my Mac. It's due to the age of my version, 3.XX an early one. It's not Mac compatible.
