When you say navigation what are you navigating to? IF streets, hwys, addresses, and points of interest are what you are in need of you want a GPS that can be updated because the data changes fast. If you are looking for navigation as in bearings, headings, and such my guess you could get by with a no brand unit. As with anything electronic some are more user friendly then others. What is there return policy, a question I always ask before purchasing.

If you travel the burbs where a new subdivision is added every year (or at least was until this year), then the map updates may be significant. But there are areas where the roads don't change that rapidly. Up to date POI may be of value, but frankly often there is a lot of garbage in those databases. How often do you need to find the nearest auto body shop, or nightclub.

I just got a refurbished TomTom, which after rebate should cost me about $60. I was able to download an up to date map, but opted out of subscribing to regular updates. I've also figured out how to add my own POI, which I think will be more valuable than the builtin ones (most of the time).
