Need Help fro M416A1 Axle Modders!

OK, I'm going nuts! A few months ago I got an M416 that needed a little love to get it useable. Turns out that sometime during its life in the Marines and Forest Service, someone swapped out the axle with an M416A1. Of course I had already rebuilt the axle before making this discovery. I also discovered that the new M416 e-brake cable I ordered from Jeep Parts is the wrong one.

There are no M416A1 cables on any of the normal Jeep parts sites. I fear that most get yanked and tossed into a scrap pile during axle swaps. So... I am hoping that someone has a descent M416A1 e-brake cable assy and the mounts that secure the cable casing to the frame underside.

This is the last major component I have to install before the wife puts us to work hauling yard material. yea

Thank you for reading.

So the 416A1 has surge brakes and a different axle too?

The 416 and 100 trailer parts are not the same?

Yup, I guess they had to make things interesting. The M416/M100 are more similar. As soon as the surge brake is added, the complexity goes up a couple orders of magnitude.

I have a really nice ebrake cable, brackets and handle but I need to figure out how to disassemble the connector from the brake drum. I also need one more thing, the exact measurements required to replace this axle with one that has a 6x5.5 stud setup and will fit my FJ Cruiser tires. Everyone on the internet seems to have performed axle swaps but not one has actual measurements. I dont want to use any sort of wheel insert or anything else like that. If I can get this then I can sell you my assembly.

I read that the M416A1 is a standard axle and the hub can be swapped for one with a proper bolt pattern. The question is offset. I too would like the trailer to have the same tires as my FJ so I will only need to carry a single spare. But the fenders on the trailer will need to be modded, the axle messed with, offset dealt with... I went with OEM Willys Jeep tires and rims and called it good.

My axle is screwed so it has to go, I have no choice there. Just need to get measurements for spring centers to hub face, spring center to spring center and hub face to hub face, I have everything else. I am sure someone out there has done this based on the threads I've read but not one has an actual measurement anywhere. It's agonizing because I cant measure my axle, its gone.

Are you wanting stock axle measurements or the measurements folks had custom built? I can help with the stock measurements.

Stock would be perfect. I can extend it from there as needed. I'm going to run FJ stock steel wheels, thank you!!!!

OK, the 1st black widow that dropped on me while measuring was about 3/4" but squished up to a nice 1.5" after 3 stomps. Add one beer to tummy...

Axle. spring center to spring center is 39.5". Spring center to hub face is 8.5".

Hope this helps!
