Need help picking a new truck!

My mom has a Titan. Bought it brand new in 2004 I think and she still has it with all of its 230k miles. Still works like a charm and is her daily driver.

Have you ever thought about getting something a little older? Like an old CUCV square body Chevy with very little miles or an OBS Ford? Those would all be great for mountains and the occasional trip into town.

Titan is out for sure. Too rough around the edges for me.

I'll take a look at the Tahoe, I've never been much of a Chevy fan but worth a look. 1st Gen Sequoias are going for about $7-9k in my area with about 180-200k miles.

I'm not opposed to something domestic, my daily driver has been a 2014 Ford and it's honestly one of the favorite cars I've ever owned. It will be a sad day letting it go but it won't survive up north.

The search continues!

$10k or under? Don't want/need anything special? Go domestic. Pick anything on the GMT800 platform (Tahoe, Silverado, Burb, etc) put some decent tires under it and call it a day.

Titans are real cool, but early ones also had weak brakes, weak rear diffs, and all of them crack exhaust manifolds pretty handily.

So I'm trying desperately to follow your advice, but let me tell you these things are just as hot of an item here in Phoenix as the Toyotas. Anything under 10k is gone before I can even get out to see it. Had one I fell in love with 2 days ago, sold before I could get off work, and the guy who bought it reposted it this morning for $1500 more. I'm a little salty......

I'm still looking but starting to get discouraged and we will really be needing this thing soon. We moved up last week in the middle of a snowstorm and the POS 2wd Kia we're borrowing almost rammed into the back of the uhaul because it wouldn't stop in the snow. Then getting it in and out of the driveway everyday was an anxiety-ridden feat.

Are there any opinions on the GMT400 platform? I've found what looks to be a decent 97 C/K 1500 4x4 Z71 with 189k miles for under 10k. Just trying to figure out if this may be a bit too old for us.....

I’d stick to GMT800. It’d be more tolerable for day to day driving.

Set an alert for new trucks that come online. Autotrader works well. Don’t be discouraged. Just check daily and you’ll land one soon. There are too many of these for you to not get the one you want at the price you want.

Thanks for the advice. And trust me I look all day, everyday! Apparently not only are there a ton of people flush with cash, but none of them have a physical job they need to go in to during the day!

Yes, lots of flippers in this crazy hot market. And it seems like lots of rust belt cars make it down to the southwest as well, so watch out for that. They can sell them for more here so lots of dealers are buying them from the NE auctions and bringing them down.

Anything worth buying is hard to find now. Shipping something, or doing a fly then drive (even on something as “normal” as a 15 year old Chevy) is what we as enthusiasts need to do now. There is no such thing as an “undiscovered” platform anymore. GM full-sizes, Lexus trucks, hell even Land Rover LR3/4 prices are nuts (woulda thought prices on used modern Rovers would go UP???) They all exist, they’ve all been around for 10 years or close to it, and everyone actually knows what they have now.

We’re buying the last of a generation type of vehicles that will never be built again, ever. 10 years from now it’ll be hard or impossible to buy a new fully ICE vehicle. And thanks to the pandemic, people are driving the already crazy “offroad-truck” market even more nuts.

Last year I sold a motorcycle at basically a fire sale price because used motorcycles were a glut on the market. I should have kept it, because ever since the pandemic took hold, used motorcycle prices have gone crazy. My guess is that with production lines and dealerships shut down for a month or more, this caused a backlog of demand that shifted over to the private sale market.

My guess is that much the same is happening to the 4 wheel vehicle market, i.e. pent-up demand + reduced supply due to COVID shutdowns has caused prices to skyrocket. The good news is that prices should start dropping pretty quickly as people get vaccinated and businesses start reopening.

If your up to the Tahoe, Suburban, look at an Expedition.
I'd pick a Ford for durability any day over a GM.

I like Tundras and sure they are pretty reliable... But paying premium money for anything with over 200K on it is mental.

200K miles on a Tundra is not considered a lot of miles if it's well maintained. You will find any truck regardless of miles is going to get a premium price. It has been this way since the beginning of them being manufactured. It's very rare to get a discount on a new or used truck. Once in a great while when a new generation model comes out you can do it if there is old stock on the floor. Timing is everything.

It is a mind blower driving by the local RV and truck lots to see empty spaces and hardly any inventory. Funny you mention motorcycles. I also noticed them selling for outrageous prices for both new and used. And again the showroom floors are low on inventory of the popular models.

Forgot to come back and update this thread. After missing out on truck listings more times than I can count I was finally able to get my hands on a 2006 Silverado extended cab 4x4 with the HD rear end. It's nothing fancy as it's a WT and former fleet vehicle so no bells and whistles but its an actual lever 4wd not push button and overall in great shape. Already been converted to LED lights front and rear. Just had it inspected by the dealer and other than an oil change and some new belts they report a great service history and no issues. 159k on the clock.

Next up will be camper shell, lift, tires. Let the modding begin!!! ???

Nailed it. While it might run and drive fine...every other component in that truck will be worn.
