Need new parts supplier for Unimog U500

Hi, I have a 2004 U500 Unimog, located in Northern California. The West Coast Freightliner dealers are no longer carrying U500 parts. I have heard that an outfit in Michigan has bought-out the parts inventories but the dealers won't tell me their name. Can anyone help me? Where else might I find U500 parts? The Unimog info line (in Oregon) is not answered any longer, either. Thanks for the help!:)

My local parts source which is the local Detroit Diesel place ordered some non urgent parts for me several weeks ago (primary fuel filters, CTIS hoses, split rim rubber O-rings, spare portal box seals and bearings) andhasn't received them and has been trying to make calls to Freightliner for a couple of days.
I sent a list of parts numbers to Neil Webster at www.merex.de and got an affirmative response within 24h.
I'm sure that engine parts like secondary fuel and oil filters and common truck parts like air dryer cartridges will still be available at DD, since the OM906LA is used on other chassis.
Anyone else know what is going on?

What spare parts are U500 owners carrying on long trips? I recently acquired a 2005 U500 and am having GXV build an expedition camper. I am new to owning a Unimog and want to get views on what parts I should plan to carry especially if lead times to acquire spares for US based U500 are becoming a concern. I am planning long term global travel in this vehicle.

Thanks!

Hi and Thanks everyone. I know about the usual suppliers for Mog parts but need to zero-in, I think, on folks that carry the U500 stuff. Things like air brake pots and vehicle specific parts. I understand and have suppliers for filters and such- consumables. The outfit in Michigan may be called "Vintage Imports" or something like that- they are supposed to have many U500 parts. My Mog is used for wildland firefighting and a reliable parts supplier is important to keep it rolling. Thanks again!

I carry a lot of spare parts. So far all I've used are CTIS wheel hoses, split rim rubber O-rings and filters (I carry air filter, primary and secondary fuel, oil, PS, hydraulic, and air dryer cartridge). I also carry spare engine sensors, accelerator pedal, alternator, rectifier, starter, fuel, water, PS pump, air compressor, spare brake hoses and menders, brake pads, portal bearings, U-joints, lots and lots of seals, brake fluid (for clutch) + pressurizing tool for master cyl, clutch slave cylinder, clutch pressure plate and disk, belts, spare hoses and nylon tubing, ECU. I'm sure there's more - paper wiring diagram, WIS (maintenance manual) and parts CD disks, Star diagnosis computer...also a couple of unmounted tires on the roof of the camper in addition to the mounted spare on the back.

Charlie,

Thanks for the valuable input. You have provided me with a good shopping list. I will first check with the local Freightliner dealer for GXV and then leverage the responses to the original question in this thread to source the parts as needed.

I would like to report that Neil Webster at www.merex.de is an excellent contact regarding U500 parts. Even though he is in Gaggenau and I am in Anchorage, we got the order together in about 5 working days of emails (slowed by the time difference of 10hrs and an incorrect setting on my email), and a fax with the part numbers. The order was assembled and went out on a Friday and arrived at my doorstep Mon am.
Please make his job easier and sign up for the Mercedes EPC so you can fax a list with correct part #s including alternate part #s.
