Need Radio Advice...

I picked up a FT-8800 on e-bay for 300$, including the face place kit. I'm using the Comet SBB-7 dual band antenna, mounted on the hood.

I've had it set up for a week now. I'm finding the local repeaters and was able to hook up to the Western Reflector on the 70cm freq.

I thinks having the dual band is a big plus. I've asked the other hams how the signal is, and so far it's loud and clear.

Good Luck :)

Since you really don't fit in the garage anyway:

And you want it on your hood, right?

I am a little confused on the hood mount that Diamond has. I would much rather drill another hole in fender than have the antenna lift up when the hood is opened. So I am leaning towards the Larsen TMB34B mount:

What about the Diamond NR73BNMO? It's black (+1 in my book) but looks a bit shorter (yeah yeah yeah... longer is better). OR the Comet SBB-5NMO (it has the fold over too.

That one Mark and Mountain Pete have is the fixed angle bracket I posted.

Yup leaning towards that one..

This is my shopping list...(so far still looking into other options) I think it would work:
  • LARSEN NMO-K MTG .5IN TO 17FT RG58 PL
  • LARSEN TMB34B TRUNK L-BRACKET BLACK .75
  • LARSEN NMO-2/70B 144/440 COIL & W270B WHIP
  • YAESU FT-7800R XCVR 2M/440 50/45W FM

Wil - sorry I missed this post before.

For the bracket, just go to a commercial radio shop. They are a simple dime a dozen bracket. I overthought it when I was looking around and settled on a tried and true bracket that is used on everything from cop cars to taxis.

What Kenwood were you refering to in the PM you sent me? I do like Yeasu units... In fact I have a portable unit for flying.

The Kenwood D700 and 710 are very nice. The 700 can connect via APRS so you can SMS via VHF if you hit the right repeater. Never used that feature before, but I understand that it's seriously cool.
