Need some help with removing a Gen 1 radio

I'm installing a pioneer CD player and removing the original radio. So far it's caused lots of swearing and little progress. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it pull-out or do I need to remove the center dash?

try downloading the FSM from mitsubishilinks.com and checking out the section on removing it first. May make things easier for you.:smiley_drive:

I completely did away with my stereo and opted for an iPod connected to an amp wired to the speaker wire harness (been broken into twice). The factory stereo I removed was a double din unit.

To the best of my memory, this is what I did.

Remove the center dash panel. Two small screws at the top on the climate control section and two larger screws on the side accessible from the footwell. The larger screws are covered by a plastic oval piece (you can pry it or just reach in behind and push it out).

Once the screws are off, carefully pull the panel from the top and you'll have access to the wiring couplings for the clock, cigarette lighter, climate control, antenna and stereo harness. Take note of which is where and unplug them (each has its on size, so you shouldn't have problems matching them up later).

Remove the center panel, along with the stereo.

The factory stereo is further secured by two more screws on the left and right sides.

Hope this helps.
