Need some series help!

Depending on your intended use you might want to consider moving your headlights back to the original position and replacing the front wing panels with IIa panels. The IIa bumper is a perfect location of mounting two 20L jerry cans, as seen here.

Why is that 109 chained to posts??? I'm hoping that is a "parking brake" modification and not some form of punishment!

I just saw an e-bay listing for two parts IIa's on LRO (I think you commented on this Tom) and both had decent looking wings. Of course i got me thinking I could use a parts vehicle but then the whole -"where would I put such a thing and still stay married" question reared it's ugly head.

The IIa wings are getting tough to find I hear and thus getting pricey, but it would look nice if put back the way it was intended.

Here's a related question, is there a short jerry can that will fit this spot but not block the running lights and turn indicators?

Perhaps an anti-theft device?

oh, you can't let that stop you. ;)

NOS occasionally turns up, and isn't that bad, on the order of 30-40 quid.
But they are very simple panels and any body shop that can roll panels would be able to make you some if you wanted to go that route and couldn't find NOS or good used ones.

You can get 5L cans, but they'd still block the headlights I'm pretty sure.
As you can see from the photo the indicator and marker lights need to be moved to the wing tops. There are two light pods I've seen. The posh ones like in the photo, and a more plain type that are just wedge shaped units made from 4 flat pieces of Al.

Another interesting thing to note is that this was originaly a soft top. It has the fixings on the body and is set up for a tailgate. Hard top was a later addition. I also agree that it is a late IIA with some other stuff on it.

AFAIK all 2 door 109 rear tubs had the softtop lashing points on them, even with factory installed full length tops.
At least I've never seen one without them.

If you had the regular old IIA wings- yes, the 2.5/10l gallon jerrycans would fit. That has alaways been on my "to buy" list but now with all the CARB nonsense they are getting hard to find. 10l water jerrycans are still readily available and would go there ok.

It is very interesting to read what you all are saying about this rover as the PO didn't have much to tell me. He isn't a roverphile, he just liked having an old truck. As soon as I get it to my house I will post vins and some pics of the engine and see what else we can deduce. Wander, what makes you think the original color was marine blue? I am still tossing around color ideas and it would be pretty cool to go back to the original color. Again thanks for the advice and keep it coming. I did not grow up working on trucks so I am still learning as I go.

I found an old post from the LRO mailing list that you might be interested in, since you have a diesel
From: "Tom Rowe" <trowe@xx.xxxxx.WISC.EDU>

Subject: diesel primers

This is for all you oil burners out there. Back in '83 while stuck in
Greenville, SC with a broken down VW (that's a story for another
list) I took a tour of the CAV plant there. They were quite friendly
and loaded me up with catalogs and stuff. One thing in the literature
that might be of interest is an "Easy vent kit" for the CAV DPA
pumps.
They are T shaped threaded handles that replace the vent screws on
the DPA pump. There are three part numbers:
7167-750
7167-750A
7167-750B
All were priced at $13.50 US in '83. The information I have doesn't
indicate which one fits the pumps on the LR.

The advantage of these kits is that you no longer need tools to prime
your fuel system at the injection pump.

There's also a hand primer available that mounts on the fuel filter
to make it a little easier to pump up the fuel if you run empty.
It has one fitting that attaches at the banjo bolt and the other is
1/2" x 20UNF, PN HP6223003. It's not in my old price list.

CAV also makes a dual filter unit that mounts in place of the stock
unit, water seperators and other items that may be of interest. If
anyone has specific interests just e-mail me directly.

Thats prob a good idea. I think the PO said there is something fishy with the full gauge where is says you have more fuel than you really have. He has just been keeping it full but it is something I will have to delve into once I have it. Did you ever get one to try?

Well, I didn't have a diesel at the time, and then I actually forgot about them. I haven't seen any in the US, but my wife is going to be in the UK this month, so if I can sort out the PN I'm going to have her pick up a couple of the kits.
Here's what they look like.

Please let me know the details as you find them out. Those look like they would make a bad sitch better if and when I do run out of fuel.

Wander, what makes you think the original color was marine blue?

I got that impression as the rear looks similar to the pale, faded blue on my tail gate and rear tub area. The PO of mine had an excellent-maybe too nice-repaint on the exterior and front area of the interior but oddly left off the rear tub area (maybe ran out of paint?)

Wander,

You can mount the Jerry cans on their side up front and they clear the indicators fine. That's what I did with mine and it works great. Carawagon originally did the same thing when building their conversions, and since I built a Carawagon roof for mine, I thought I would follow suit with the accessories as well! There was a thread a couple of weeks back on Rovers North forum about jerry can mounting locations for series. You should check it out if considering mounting some jerry cans.

Here's mine:

Salve, this would do nicely on your new purchace. :)
And the price is right. LOL

For the jerry can mount as you've seen there are several options. A couple more not mentioned are the bumper mounted ones that hold 2 20L cans, as shown here on Herbert Zipkin's 109 in this photo on TeriAnn's website.

In it you can see the wing top light fixture I was talking about. This is the kind I have a set of.

For Series III Land Rovers, there was a jerry can mount (Rover PN RTC8030) that held one can that mounted in to the recessed area of the front. I've generally seen people mount two of them, against the inner side of each wing. But then there isn't room for a winch.
