New Guy-Handheld question-East Coast Coverage

I'm an east coast person, new to HAM, and starting the process of shopping and learning. Live, travel and play in the area where there is no cell phone coverage. My wife is nervous that if somethng happens, they wont know where to find me, since I cant phone home. So, question is is there a Handheld HAM that can be used as a stand alone unit, one that can be moved between vehicles, thrown in fanny pack, carry along kind of thing or do I need to have a unit within both vehicles to get the coverage needed such as Dakatari Ed discussed in hie FJ install? I am likely going to have to purchase from West Marine, as our local sales are limited and know that I need to study and take the test but input and advice would be appreciated.

I have a hand held - it can transmit/receive sometimes 5-20 miles if everything is right, and someone knows you are in the area. I wouldn't count on a hand held or any 2m radio to (get someone's attention) find me in an emergency situation. :peepwall:

Read some of the info on the SPOT Messenger! I don't have one...(yet b/c I think I'm getting one for christmas or my birthday) but the reviews i've read helped me talk the wife in to picking up one for me!
