New Guy, Looking to getting a Rover

I am looking into getting a 1998 Range Rover.

What do I need to be looking into? are there lift kits available, ARB's website didnt seem to show much.

Any help/hints/suggestions would be great.

I know there are lot of land rover guys who get razzed a lot for their rovers, some of the jeering is supported i guess, but not more than any other vehicle. so what can I do keep my new rover in tip-top shape?

Eh boy. There are lots of threads about those RR's, even just recently. You should just read them, because this is going to go down the same way. Basically, the majority are going to tell you to avoid that generation of truck.

I don't know anything about that generation of Range Rovers, however, I wanted to welcome you to ExPo. I'm sure you'll find lots of information and opinion here.

As has been said, there is already alot of information about this generation of RR. Take a look at www.rangerovers.net, it's a great wealth of Range Rover knowlege. Land Rovers in general all seem to have their issues, but they also have character! I ran across these two RR's on the way back from xjmike's Death Valley trip. The white P38 has a 12,000lb winch, the bumper and roof rack were designed and fab'd by the owner and the owner of the blue RRC. Personally, I would opt for a coil spring conversion early on in the outfitting of that generation of Rangie.

There is a lot of info out here and other forums about the Range Rover. You will probably hear a lot of negatives about the overall reliability of the truck, but many common and previously expensive problems have been worked out. Same engine as the late Discos. Be prepared to do some work on it as these trucks will destroy your wallet if you have to take it the dealer for common fixes.

Read a few of these threads first and of course rangerovers.net.

I would tell you to look consider the 1999-2002 due to the bosch engine management and further upgrades. So far, I love driving my 2001 P38, but haven't taken it off pavement yet. Eliminating the air suspension removes potential problems, but if properly maintained and/or upgraded is very versatile. The GenIII bags give an extra 2.5 inches of travel and the compressor and valve block can be cheaply rebuilt.

Anyway, don't rush into it. There are plenty of Range Rovers out there.

(let the P38 bashing begin...)

I just think they're ugly. And that's saying something because the Discovery may very well be one of the ugliest trucks out there:smiley_drive:

Just some good natured ribbing lads...

I do love the LOOKS of the Rangies. They're jsut so classic. BUT If I were goign to buy one I think it'd be a Fist gen 2Door...

OH GOD these are SO SEXY!!!!!!!

anyway, sorry for the hijack, I just can't talk about Rangies w/o posting a picture of one of those HAHAHAHAHA...

back on topic. I know Rovers aren't nearly as unreliable as people make them out to be, but the P38 (I think that's what a 98 is isn't it???) is not one fo the most reliable Rovers. There's ALOT of info out there from people far more knowlegable then myself, I'm sure you'll find pleanty of info.

Cheers

thanks for the info, opinions, resources and jeering.

I am rather limited in the selection in my geographic area, so maybe i'll be patient and see what is availlable abroad.

who makes the lift kits and coil swap kits for the Range Rovers?
