Welcome, Maximum_Overdrive!

I'm a fan of the Explorer/Mountaineer for travel in North America. They were built in a plant in Venezuela, too, so there are plenty of examples in Venezuela and Colombia.

The Explorer with independent front suspension is not often turned into a rock crawler, but the 4x4 Explorer is fine for travel on just about anything that looks like a road (instead of a stream bed or boulder field).

The Explorer was purchased in great numbers in the late '90s, so parts are dirt cheap and easy to find. Aftermarket support for the Explorer is limited compared to Jeep, Land Cruiser or Land Rover, but there are lift kits and winch bumpers available if you're interested. For example, here's a custom bumper from RLC Welding in Louisville. It's owned by a fellow who posts as "nobodyspecial" on Pirate 4x4. This is before the bumper was painted.

You say your Mountaineer is AWD. Do you have low range in your transfer case? I thought all Explorers and Mountaineers had a two speed transfer case.

Nothing wrong with an explorer for Expo use. They make great off-road vehicles with a little help. I had a 97 V8 Explorer AWD. I bought it with 75k miles and sold it with 175k miles. Mostly trouble free. Took out the back seat and put in a sleeping platform and the mrs. and I camped extensively through out Ut. and parts of Nevada. Great vehicle. I'm now wishing I hadn't sold it.

I had a '98 explorer, and enjoyed it. I have a Chilton maintenance book left over from those days. If you want it, PM me your address and I'll send it to you.
