Hey everyone,

I have a 2001 Monty which my 3 yr old calls the "Hulk" i dont think its because its stands out or because its powerful but because it is green. Where to begin, I recently had the heads fixed cause a radiator hose broke and it over heated, so far I have replaced the CV axle, Water pump, timing belt, spark plugs/cables, rotors and calipers, air filter, starter(for some reason the one that fits is the 2001 montero sport), replaced the airbag module(the horn just kept going off randomly). All i got left to "fix" is the pesky SES light. I have a P0421 and every where i have been they tell me it will be over $900. If anyone has any inputs on how to fix this with out breaking the bank i would appreciate it. Once that is done i will be getting a lift kit, bigger tires, and lockers (still dont know what they do or if they are necessary but it was suggested)

Before i ask any dumb questions i will do my best to research the forum but if i cant find what i am looking for just know the dumb questions will be flowing

421 is an oxy sensor indicating a cat failure, right?

Lockers "lock" axles so they claw out of difficult terrain instead of spinning one wheel. Youtube search will show you what they do. If you offroad but never get into a position where you lift a wheel off the ground, you don't need one, really.

Im guessing either no one has ran into the Cat failure or just forked the money to fix it....i read somewhere that it could be fixed with non-foulers but dont know if its a valid fix

Check that the sensor is within spec. If the catalytic converter is dead, the only valid fix is a new one.

Before you start spending unnecessarily, get out and use the thing. The truck is extremely competent and needs very little done to it. I put slightly larger tires on but certainly don't need lockers or high-dollar suspension work to get anywhere I want to go. If you rely on advice from online enthusiasts rather than your own experience you'll end up throwing the entire JC Whitney catalog at the poor truck!

Thats pretty much what mine is going to cost with all new sensors and they guy at the shop told me he would remove the cat behind the muffler cause it wasnt needed, I've been to many shops out here but he was the only one willing to lift the Monty and check underneath it for free.

I value everyone's opinion and advice and then try to apply it with what i would actually need.

I have been putting in money to et it up to par, the previous owner did no maintenance on it what so ever and at this point the cheapest solution would not be the right one...New Cat and sensors will be the next things i buy

I'm curious as to who took all the ****ty plastic cladding off your truck…it looks great, I can't wait to do it on mine, the Gen III's look awesome without all that silly plastic.
