new here but not to four wheeling or extended exploration. I"m always looking to make my 82 Scrambler more efficient and make things easy to focus on enjoying the trip and not worrying about how to get the 15 # back into the 5 # sack each morning. My jeep is pretty stock with the 258, a 999 auto swapped, twin stick dana 300. I went with a Scout Dana 44 rear with a detroit and 4.11 gears and left the stock D 30 up front but did a Warn hub conversion, matched the gears and put in a lock rite I won at a raffle. Springs are Alcans, reverse shackle up front, 35x12.5x15 tires, shocks are bilsteins, seats are mastercraft inside a Rockhard cage. Lots of home built odds and ends....

I'll add some pics if anyone want them but apparently I don't have any here on this machine

i like to keep it simple. less crap to break and leave you stranded.

i have a 78 wagoneer. i can carry all the tools i need for it to fix it in the field in one tool bag.

its extremely easy to work on, no computer crap to leave me dead in the water.

today my power steering belt came off. i'm not sure why. but after i unwrapped from around the fan i used a 5/8" wrench and had it running in about 5 minutes with power steering.

anyway:

i would go through you wiring harness. clean up anything that is not reliable. make sure you don't have a potential fire hazard.

check all your plumbing. fuel, coolant, oil, and brakes. make sure you don't have any leaks.

check out your battery and all of its connections.

make sure your radiator is up to snuff and that you have a good clutch fan or electric fan.

check your leaf springs and all the frame mounts for your suspension. repair the cracks.

i think you may be pushing your luck with the D30, 35's and a locker.:Wow1: i'd step up to a narrow track wagoneer D44 front axle at the very least.

sounds capable. i love my old rig. it goes just about anywhere i want to. but i still have a lot to do to it. its pretty reliable, but i've fixed any bad wiring and rebuilt the motor. so i know i'm in pretty good shape.

Hey Craig, we've missed you over in Scrambler land.

Nasty divorce --> reprioritizing stuff --> Scrambler ownership...not right now :sombrero:

I have been lurking there quite a bit more lately, though. There are still several of the "older guys" around there, but I miss the "family feel" the site used to have.

Nice pics of your home-brew Scrambler mods, too (in the other thread)!

hey! old home week it would seem, glad to see you to rj!

Sorry to hear that Craig, hope things are getting better for you

I know what you mean, it's still better than most but not quite as 'homey' as it once was...

Thanks, I wish I were better in the execution of the ideas, but they generally work, just not as polished as I hope going in. Of course I don't spend near what the pros get for similar gear.

Pics will be coming, they will be boring since the 5 day trip from Gateway Co to Moab Ut that was to start Saturday was canceled last night.....

OK, I have to apologize for the static street shots, my exploration over the long weekend was cancelled so I didn't get to go take any good ones, hopefully these pics will be ok for now.

The Jeep is my preferred one and the one I use if the trip is unknown or if I am solo, the Dodge is for known tame, or lots of pavement outings. I'll be taking it from NM to North Dakota via Canada with two of my grandkids starting Friday

well just imagine them here cause it won't let me upload pics to this thread at all

Thanks CJ why is it that some work and some don't? The DIY thread accepts pics ok but this one doesn't, seems odd to me.

thanks, I'll send them along

might have figured it out

OK lets see of this works, the Jeep is my preferred exploration ride, I drive it everywhere, wheel it and drive it home, usually 3-7 day trips with a new camp site each night but some go to a spot and take day trips from one location. The Dodge is more for road trips and light dirt road type trips.

Apparently since i posted the jeep pics in another thread I can't post them here, maybe another pic will work (the blue cooler just tossed on top was trailside trash, not my normal method of stowage)
