New rear brake pads....and now I can't get rid of the squeal :smiley_drive:

I have only had the 98 LR Discovery for about a month and it needed new pads in the rear. I put the new pads on along with the new hardware kit(cotter pins, thin little spring plates) and now I have an awful squeal right at the end of coming to a complete stop. This is my first LR and don't know if there was something different that I was supposed to do. On the little spring plates...I put the long ends toward the center. Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks, Scott

did you liberally apply the brake grease on the backs of the pads?

they probably just need bedded in. having said that, the cheapy parts-store pads on old rotors are finicky - they may or may not quieten down. Not judging - I myself used a set of schmucks pads on my '97 D1 and an semi-aggressive bed-in routine and they're quiet. I've done the same before on a different truck and they squealed like hell until I replaced the rotors for new O.E. and used mintex pads. it's a bit of a crap-shoot!

I installed EBC Pads & Rotors on my D2 once that took 1,500mi to wear in properly and stop squealing. Seriously it was so bad at first that I swore I had a defective set or did something horribly wrong, but sure enough it worked out and they turned out to be a great set of brakes. On D2s the brakes can make or break your disco experience. Some people think that the squealing and vibrations cause 3-amigos. Proper bed in is also a big deal. I didn't do a very good job with bed in and probably extended the process as a result.

Spring plates?

Try this:
Get on the freeway, stop aggressively from 40 to 20mph
Drive for 1 minute with no braking
stop aggressively from 60 to 20mph
Drive for 1 minute with no braking
stop aggressively from 60 to 20mph
While holding the brakes gently, apply the gas and increase your speed to 60mph for 30 seconds.
Drive for 2 minute with no braking
Brake violently from 60mph to 5 mph.
Drive for 2 minute with no braking

Your brakes should be broken in. If they squeal you need to add some anti squeal.

what are the 3 amigos?
D1 owners don't have them.

I usually get my pads/rotors are NAPA or O'reilly, never had squealing.
