New to this, need battery options and other input

I just picked up a modified Heilite off road 'camper' from another member. I have a list of mods I'd like to do, but first is getting a battery done so I have some lights in the boonies.

This is what I have - Heilite, 35" muds, 60's camper box and canvas, Torflex axle:

I'd like to place the battery inside the box or mount it underneath along the trailer frame. I don't need to operate much, just a bright light for the outside at night and a low-lite interior light for evenings. I don't ever plan on doing a fridge, for example.

We plan on mostly doing 3 day runs, but we do at least one full week out in the mountains each year. I'm thinking a battery option w/ an inverter of some type and then a 7-pin charging option for a recharge when needed.

What lights are best for long lasting, good illumination?

What are my best, most simple and affordable options here? I simply don't want to be buying new AAA batteries every day we're out, and w/ small kids I don't want to use propane lights exclusively.

I'll be looking for a water container too, mount that under the trailer and get these 7 gal jugs off the tongue. A hand pump is fine, but if I get the right power for it I can look into an elec pump.

I'll then put a basket up front to carry my two Coleman coolers and maybe gas or something. I use the small propane bottles right now, so no need for a mounting location for larger cylinders just yet.

I'm looking for a good canopy system so we have some shade when needed, maybe even a fly for additional rain protection, point me in the right direction.

Ok, while I'm at it...I don't have measurements of it yet but I'll definitely need a new mattress. It's an odd size but what is in there now simply won't do. I need more cush :D

Lastly, I'll probably weld a receiver tube to the rear frame so I can put a bike rack off the back (no rush there). However, I could also use that to attach a receiver carrier if I did need more gear hauling room (don't want to get to off balance tho).

I'm pretty stoked...feel free to share any thoughts, mods, etc. Because, YES, I'm new to all this :sombrero:

Nice rig... I'm doing the same thing, very soon.. I have debated on dual 6 volt optima's in series mounted above the axle under the trailer, or a single 12 marine blue top optima on the tongue.. I haven't pulled the trigger, just yet. I have done my research and the blue tops are better for slow drains not really for CCA. Nice thing about AGM batts' is that you can mount them any angle and they can take a beating.

make sure you get a battery tender for the appropriate batteries you decide on. charging AGM batteries takes a different kind of trickle charger.

I'm using the ALL START model ALC612. five stage maintenance, 6 and 12 volt.

I have to run an ARB for a couple of days, so I plan on using a solar charger as well.

LED lights for interior illumination are key.. low voltage drain and very small and easy to install.. Socaljeeper has a post on here I couldn't find it but he's got a ton of mods and good ideas for his trailer... he would know..
I have the flood lights on the back of my jeep and turn those on for reverse driving in the dark and to light up the trailer when towing in rough terrain at night... which I seem to do a lot of, and they work well for camping lights.

Matress.. stay away from memory foam if you're camping in the cold.. they get hard in the cold and take a long time to soften up.. however in the summer they also get and stay hot... no bueno. great for spring and fall camping. Ask me how I found out...

do a google search for RV water tanks and you should be able to find the right size to fit your needs....
good luck

Thanks, Toolman, all great info. I've done a lot of searching, reading, but it's ALWAYS nice to have some testimonial stuff...and some feedback on ways to be smart about the right stuff the first time.

Good to know about that mattress, I'll look for something else.

That's a really cool looking trailer. I also just got a trailer that needs most of the same fine tuning measures you are thinking of doing. I'll try to pass on what I learn and will be monitoring this thread for new ideas as well. For lights, have a look at this (company is run by fellow forum member): http://www.massifled.com/shop/strip_lighting/

Elsewhere on this forum, some one posted this link as a source for tanks and fittings: http://www.etanks.com/home/
