New Year's BBRSP Trip!

Hey all, just got back from our New Year's trip to Big Bend Ranch State Park. Had a blast being out there but unfortunately had to cut it short for a few reasons, biggest of which was the weather. We woke up Jan 2nd to freezing temps, rain and fog and decided to leave before the trails got too slick to get out. Better safe than sorry.

Anyway, here's the story!

Dec. 31st, arrive in Presidio, TX via Hwy 90 and Hwy 67, stay the night, fuel up, check over things. Our host was great and very hospitable but didn't get great vibes from the town, won't be staying there again if we can help it.

Jan. 1st, drove into the park, checked in at Sauceda and set up our itinerary:
Day 1: Solitario trail, road to nowhere, maybe see the flat irons (weather sucked), on to Mexicano 2, hike a bit
Day 2: Leave Mexicano 2 and madrid falls road, back to ranger station, on to Guale 2, hike a bit
Day 3: Leave Guale 2, return on FM170 (River Road) through Lajitas, Terlingua and BBNP, back to Del Rio via Hwy 90.

Didn't get much sleep the first night, weather came down hard, freezing temps at the higher elevation, 20' visibility with the fog, rain and a few flurries. No chance for star photography (or any photo ops) like I had hoped, but still got to be out there. We didn't even attempt Guale 2, figured with the weather going sour through the morning, cut our losses and fast forward to the River Road and home.

All in, a great trip. Truck performed fantastically, only managed to sag my rear leafs a bit, forcibly relocate the trailer plug and some pin striping. Will need to add air bags to the back for more clearance with a load out there.

On with the pics? Ok!

Looks good! I've lucked out the last couple of times and gotten there about a week after a rain, in the springtime. The cactus flowers are AWESOME.

I'm glad you had suitable digs in Presidio; its always funny to me that the ****ty, flyblown, cinderblock border town is on the US side of the river, and the bustling city in Mexico.

When ya'll were around the Solitario, you didn't happen to run across this old truck did you? I drove past it several years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember exactly were it was.

I couldn't help but pose my truck rifle: I figure having a visible firearms doesn't matter much when there's not another person for 10 miles. :)

Sorry your pics aren't working for me.

I don't remember seeing an old truck, just another Tacoma and and a handful of other 4x4's. Did see one banged up new RV, definitely out of its element haha.

Presidio is misleading man. The drive in is beautiful, but then you get there and notice the BP live in a protected compound and you wonder if you did cross the river.

Thanks for the write up! Haven't been to BBRSP yet but been to BBNP three times, headed back in March the week of Easter and hoping to spend some time in BBRSP, any campsite must do in BBRSP?

Sorry about the weather, we were in the same boat in October in BBNP, all dirt was closed save for Old Ore... Never been to presidio, don't plan on going now for sure...
