January 1st, 2014 was a pretty good day.
The plan was simple, enjoy the mid 70 degree weather we've been having and make a run to Chiva Falls to the east of Tucson. I was excited to get out for a few reasons. First of all, this was the first real trail I took my new Rubicon on as a stock vehicle and I wanted to see how the modifications worked by comparison. Second, I was going to have a day out of the house with my wife and daughter. Third, a long time friend of mine was actually coming out and bringing his almost completely non-stock tacoma. Lastly, he was going to let me drive it over some obstacles I wouldn't dream of taking the jeep over.
We set out from the meetup at 10am with intentions to hit the trail, go to the first obstacle (play area) and watch a few people attempt some of the more difficult lines. Unfortunately, my friend was running late and had my memory card for the camera, so there are no pictures of just how many rigs were out and about on a single trail. Over the entire day i'd imagine there were 50+ vehicles on this single trail, yet with many different spots to stop, it really didn't feel too crowded.
My friend arrived after we had been watching others attempt and fail at obstacles for over an hour. So when he showed up I grabbed my memory card and pushed on. We would meet up at the end of the day.
By this time it was already noon, and we were hungry. We made our way to an area known as the pools. A series of small pools and waterfalls. There we ate a quick lunch and watched as others came and went.
My daughter decided this was a good spot to dig for gold :archaeolo:
After lunch I split up from the other guys I was with to head out as they pressed on to the falls. I had a family dinner to attend and didn't want to take too long getting out. Plus I still needed to meet up with my friend and his Tacoma.
On the way out I took a different line with the jeep and flexed it a bit.
After getting past this area I parked and let the kid sleep (she can sleep though the roughest terrain) while my wife took pictures. This was when the fun began.
I hopped into the drivers seat of my friends tacoma. It's a cobbled together beast of a truck that can tackle pretty much anything. With coaching from my friend I drove it around the play area going up and down some things I would not take my jeep on.
After a bit of this I moved over to the passenger seat and my friend took the helm. It was time to tackle the most difficult line in this area. With guidance from a professional rock racer (king of hammers) we would. make it to the top.
Things started out great and we were quickly in a position to crest the top. I suppose due to the fact that it was accomplished rather quickly, the spotter decided we needed to re-try, on a different line. It was as we were backing down that my friend and I started discussing the roll cage he built and how sturdy it was. This conversation would prove to be more pertinent than we thought.
Too easy.....back down and try over here........
Nope....not there...over there.
Now you see us....
Uh...Where'd you go?
