Newbie looking for expert advice (Southern Africa self drive Overlanding)..

I'm interested in organizing an overlanding (self driving) South African adventure for my wife and I. I don't have any specific overlanding experience but I live in West Africa (Nigeria) so more or less understand the dynamics of travel in Africa.

Initially I was considering to overland by way of a truck with a reputable company; the trucks can transport large groups with people from different countries. Although it can be fun and allow for great friendships to be forged I felt that there are more benefits in independent travel in terms of privacy and flexibility..

Still, I'd appreciate some advice to help me kick-start my research in the right direction. Although I value the freedom of independent travel in Africa I'd still like to follow a route and have some support along the way. Preferably I'd like a route through part of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana (or just SA and Namibia depending on time constraints).

Thus far I've been able to find a company called "Bushlore Africa" (bushlore.com) who cater to self driven overlanding. If there's anyone on the forum who has first hand experience working with a company of this sort (who rent out top notch fully kitted safari vehicles) please do let me know. I don't have a specific budget; really looking to work with a high end company who have the best equipment and services.

Also, apologies if this question has been already posted (and answered); I did do a site search but may have missed it in the sea of info out there..

Trip dates: December 20 - January 10-ish...

Looking forward to a great (and much needed) adventure in Africa : )

Hi!

I have seen very many people doing this when I was traveling around Southern Africa - overall, you will find that it is much easier than you would expect. It is however more expensive than jumping on a tour bus.

This company has a great reputation and I believe they are advertiser/sponsor with Overland Journal and Overland Expo - always good to support the community

Do NOT do one of the bus/truck trips. Having said that; if you are 18-25 then maybe worth a look. If not, do not even consider it.
The truck trips almost isolate you from the experience you're looking for. You have no say in the trip planning, routing, timing etc. They have canned itineraries with little to no leeway, since there are 12 of your closest strangers along for the ride.

A few points: that is not a lot of time for the countries you;re considering. Also, that is a very hot time of year to go. Not to say don't since many, including me, do. Just know that it can be hot as blazes especially in Namibia. Feel free to send me a PM if you like. I am a forum sponsor, Bundu Gear, and i also plan and conduct fly-in and self-drive safaris, since i spent 8 yrs as a guide in the region. Safari Drive also do an excellent job. Great knowledge and service too. Can't go wrong. They will help with route planning, equipment, and essentially, SAT phone for the trip.
