Newbie Questions.....

Hey everyone, brand new to forums, and fairly new to Overlanding/Camping period. We just purchased a ORU Pop Up Topper and I want to power it with my EcoFlow River Pro (720-1440 Wh capacity, 600 W Output) power station. When we pick it up it will have a maxxair fan with just the wiring to wire it up. First off, I want to say upfront that I know very little about electrical systems in RV’s, Vans, etc. We are traveling across the country to pick up the ORU Topper, and I would like to at least be able to use the maxxair fan for the trip home.

We primarily will use the Ecoflow for power while we move around the country. I have Solar Panels for it, but honestly, in the past, we have just charged it up as we drive. Or we just take it in and plug it in to an outlet in a restaurant, rest area, etc. to charge it back up. Now, that being said, we only stayed 1 night in a place before moving on the last time we used it. But that may change with the ORU Topper. So, I really don’t know how long the charge will last in it. When we first got the Ecoflow, we were car camping in our CRV. So we plugged our 12v fridge in and that was about it.

Now we will have the fridge, maxxair fan, and maybe some LED lights. We also will charge our phones and Macbook as needed. We might also use a USB Fan, and I might even use my Ryobi charger to charge some batteries back up if possible. I also wondered if it would be possible to use a small electrical ceramic heater on the cold nights, but that might be too much.

Anyways, I am so confused on how I should set up my wiring in the Topper to run at least the maxxair fan and the fridge. But, like I said, we would like to use it for other things too if possible. I drive a Toyota Tundra, and thought about having someone put some electrical outlets (12v) in the bed of the truck. Right now, we just plug the Ecoflow into the Cigarette lighter in the truck while we are driving, and plug the fridge into the Ecoflow. If we stop to eat or something, we just let the fridge run off the Ecoflow while we eat. I could still do that, but I think my better half wants the have the fridge in the bed of the truck in a designated spot. I told her we could just move it back there when we stop to sleep or camp. The main problem is I only have one 12v outlet on the Ecoflow, and both the maxxair fan and fridge need to use it. So how do I run both off of the Power station? I think I have seen people run wiring from the maxxair fan to a fuse block and then to the power station. Can I do that with the fridge also, and is that the right way to do it? The fridge already has a 12v plugin. The maxxair fan has nothing right now. I am supposed to do the wiring on it. If I want to put some LED lights in, do I run them to a fuse block too? I guess I am asking do I need to run everything to the fuse block and then have one 12v plug coming from the fuse block to the EcoFlow?

I thought about purchasing another cheap power station, I found a ALLPOWERS 299Wh 600W Portable Power Station R600 on Amazon for less that $200, and if seems like a good buy and would be a nice backup. Then I could run the fan off one, and the fridge off the other. I really don’t know what the right answer is. So I would appreciate any help you all can give me. I also am very curious if it’s even possible to plug a small electrical heater, like the Amazon Basics 500-Watt Ceramic Small Space Personal Mini Heater? Thanks in Advance!

That seems like a lot to unpack.

My initial thought is that wiring a topper to run everything off a power station is at odds with the goal of a power station.

Wire and plan on installing a battery, then use your power station as a secondary source if and when portability is needed.

For the fan / trip home, crimp on a short piece of lamp cord, add a plug that matches your power station with a fuse in it, and go!

Just be sure to match positive to positive and negative to negative.
