Newly redesigned 70 series

I saw this over on mud. Here's the link to the original thread with more pictures and info.

Sorry if this is old news. It was a complete surprise to me. I assume the redesign has something to do with fitting the new diesel V-8. I guess they're going to sell a turbo and non-turbo V-8 diesel, about 4.5 liters

The non-turbo makes 200 h.p. and about 295 ft/lbs. That's not much better than an old 1FZ gas I-6.

Fuel mileage is 11.9L/100km. If I did the math right, that converts out to about 24 mpg.

I'm not sure what the specs are on the turbo version, but I have to imagine it's a lot better.

As a HUGE fan of the 70 series, I really wish they didn't mess with the front end, because I thought it was a timeless design, but I figured they only did it to allow the shoehorning of a V-8. However, that said, I like that front end a lot better than anything else Toyota has come up with in terms of the new Tacoma, new Tundra and even the new Hilux. Of course, that's just my opinion.

At least the rest of the body and the mechanicals weren't messed with too much as far as I can tell.

One final note. Most of you probably already know, but I guess the LC105, solid front axled 100 series has been discontinued.

I'll admit that I didn't read through the whole Mud thread, but I thought the 105 was still made. I know the Cruiser wagons have gone through a softening up lately, so who knows. But that new 5 door looks swank, which might put a dent in the demand for a rugged 100 series.

I think it's just now being discontinued. Not sure when production has or will stop. That comes from a few of the overseas guys in that thread. I think one guy from South Africa mentioned they haven't been able to get one for a while now.

I think it makes a lot more sense to buy the model you posted, rather than an extremely expensive 105 series, which was really nothing more than a 100 body on an 80 series chassis.

I must say, I do like the new 5 door. Heck even the front end doesn't look too bad on that model. Not at all.

Toyota Gibraltar still has them in their stock. Now if only I was a qualified relief or emergency agency... It wouldn't surprise me if the 105 was discontinued, there's probably not much market left for them.

I just wish that we saw these trucks here in the US. It might persuade me to move away from Jeeps.

I wish that someone would realize there is a market for simple purpose built trucks like that here.

And you are not alone in regards to the look that the new Tacomas and Tundras are sporting, Brian....I think they look awful.

I lust after an 04 or older Taco, but can't justify spending 'new car' money on a 3+ year old vehicle with 50K on it.

The new Tacomas just don't interest me. They are bigger, uglier, and more complicated. (Apologies to anyone with an '05 and up Taco...as I am sure you guys love 'em)

Personally I happen to like the look of the new Tacoma and it's no more complex than anything else out there. It, like most current vehicles, suffers not so much from having a lot of complexity, but a lot systems that are interconnected such that they can't be split or bypassed easily. That is just as much of an issue with the Grand Cherokee or LR3 as it would be a Taco or 4Runner.

But it is pretty much permanently off my radar simply because the dimensions of the box changed. My WilderNest won't fit on it anymore and that's a major problem. The 'Nest is a part of my outfit and being that it's easy to repair it should remain in the stable until the fabric wears out. When that happens I'll probably find a tarp maker to sew up a new one, so as much as it pains me a Toyota is out for the foreseeable future. It's sort of endemic to the problems the 'Yota core is seeing, Toyota losing their way. The bed dimensions and rail size did not change from the original Hilux and a 'Nest would fit any Hilux from 1972 until 2004. Why did they have to go and mess with a basic thing like that?

And mechanically/electrically, it is probably no more complicated than the Jeep TJ I drive, or the JK I will probably soon be driving.

But the looks and size are the real deal breakers for me anyway.

It is funny that to the 'Yota purists, they seem to be 'losing their way' but from a business perspective, they are handing the 'Big 3' big losses and reaping huge profits at Toyota.

I think that the basic problem is that no car company caters particularly well with the needs that the people on this site are looking for. We will always be on the sidelines.

It sucks that they up and changed dimensions on you, but in this day and age, as a thread in the Jeep section alludes to, it is a throwaway society anyway, so I doubt they really expect people to be holding on to campers that long either. Sad.

Yup, you're right on. Thing is, there ARE companies that make vehicles for us. Toyota, Nissan, Land Rover and Mercedes all make trucks that are perfectly suited for us, we just don't get 'em (I left out Jeep because other than diesel engines we get all of their models already). How many threads here and on MUD, Pirate, etc. say I'd buy a HZJ105, HZJ78, Patrol, Mog, Defender 110 if only we could get them? WilderNest are a bit of an oddity anyway, being that they went under in the mid 1990s it's not so much a question of just wanting keep it in good shape, but that I have to keep it in good shape. The only other similar thing is the FlipPac and those are four times more than what I paid for my camper.

I usually hate redesigns, especially of an already great thing, but the new front end looks SWEET!
I still want one. And the four door,....oooooohhhhhhhh what I would to to that.......

Meh... Still like the old 70's ALOT better, the Waggy (5 door) looks good although it's a it too 80 meets 70 to me, but the Ute/trayback looks terrible IMO. Anyone seen a pic of the Troupy (2dr Waggy)???

God I miss my HJ78...
