Nice 1974 International Scout

Hello everyone,

I have decided to put my long term IHC Scout project up for sale and thought I would post it on ExPo first in case there were any closet Scout fans out there. Technically it would make a great little overlander but I made the mistake of making it too pretty to bash up (at least by me) so now I have a Dormobile for that duty.

The Scout is going on eBay this weekend so the listing below will read like an auction. If anyone is interested or has any comments on how I could make the listing better please let me know.

For those who are interested I would like to see about $10K for the truck, but under this current climate who knows. I'd like to say that I would consider trades for a Conqueror Trailer but I am sure my wife would divorce me but maybe she could be convinced; the Dormobile is going to get smaller now that there are three of us.

Thanks,
Jason

Up for auction is a very clean 1974 International Scout II. This truck has undergone an extensive restoration and customization over the past several years and will no doubt make its new owner very happy. The truck has only been driven very few miles since its rebuild as I was out of the country and simply did not have the time to finish it off. There are a few little that the new owner may want to remedy depending on his or her level of “pickyness” which I have listed below under “known issues”. I have posted several more pictures of the restoration at the following site:

http://gallery.me.com/racingjason#100155

The truck has a 345 cu.in V8 engine which was, at the risk of sounding like an eBay cliche, professionally rebuilt and has just a few hours of idle time and less than 50 miles on the clock. The work was done by a close friend who runs a reputable machine shop and does nice work. The rebuild included:

- Full cylinder rebore including new pistons and rings;
- Crank/rod resize and polish;
- Rebuilt cylinder heads with valve job and hardened seat inserts making the engine suitable for unleaded fuel;
- New camshaft, lifters, timing set and oil pump;
- Complete set of bearings, gaskets, seals etc.

The engine has been updated with a rebuilt Holley 2300 carburetor, Accell spark plug wires, new heat riser flapper valve and electric choke. The engine is mated to a T-407 (Torqueflight 727) Automatic transmission and Dana 20 transfer case both which were gone through and serviced during the rebuild. The axles are a Dana 30 up front and Dana 44 in the rear with a 3.31:1 gear ratio. The front axle has the metal part time IH selectable hubs.

The truck's frame was removed from the body and was cleaned and coated with a tough med-gloss black paint as was the underbody of the body tub. All body rot was removed and replaced with fresh metal. The body was painted with 2 part base-clear paint in “Patriot Blue” Pearl Coat (Chrysler) with “Wild Strawberry” metallic red (Ford) stripes. The red stripes are accented with white pinstripes which are painted on (not vinyl). The pattern of the stripes is similar to but, in my opinion, a little cleaner than the factory stripes found on Scouts in the 70's. A freshly chromed front bumper finishes things off. (Please take a look at the pictures on the website to see photos of the paint work in progress.)

A custom interior continues the red white and blue theme inside with newly upholstered seats and door panels including a refinished dash and full moulded carpet set. The carpet in the rear cargo area has not been tacked down so it can be removed to expose the original ribbed rubber matting in the back. The front doors and rear gate were treated a new set of door seals as well.

The factory instrument panel has been replaced with a custom unit. The dash now has a full complement of Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges including speedometer (accurate with factory tires), water temperature, oil pressure, transmission temperature (all 2 5/8”), volt meter, fuel gauge (2 1/16”) and a vacuum gauge. The wiring is neat and tidy and everything works however, if the dash is not to your taste and you would like to return it to the original style, the factory gauges and a spare Scout wiring harness will be included.

The truck sports BFG Radial All Terrain tires (30x9.50R15) that only have about 1200 miles on them. Additionally, there a set four Rancho RS5000 shocks with about the same mileage. As for options this Scout has tilt steering, power steering, power brakes and front disk brakes. An aftermarket AC unit was originally in the truck but has not been reinstalled however, it will be included in the sale. A final bit of work that all you Scout fans will appreciate, the fuel tank was removed from the vehicle and given a strong steam cleaning to prevent the common fuel filter/carb plugging problems while at the same time refurbishing the gummed up the fuel sender.

In order to be transparent as possible here are the issues I know about with this truck:

- The horn button/switch is not currently installed. I made the mistake of putting the steering wheel on before I installed the button and I don't have a puller to remove the wheel again. The parts will be included.

- The passenger corner of the rear bumper is bent slightly.

- The line for the vacuum gauge has not been connected but has been run into the engine compartment.

- The side mirror has not been installed. This requires drilling the body and I thought I would leave it to the new owner to decide what mirror he or she wanted. The stock mirror will be included.

- The 4wd selector light has not been wired in though I am pretty sure I checked the switch and it worked.

I should not have to say this but because there are a few people out there that like to cause trouble I will state it plainly; the truck is not perfect. It has been stored inside and well taken care of but there a few small scuffs and nicks that come with time, even though it has not been driven. That being said, it is a beautiful truck and I am proud to have owned and built it and as I have said before, I am sure the new owner will enjoy it as well.

The truck come with the following extra parts and accessories:

The truck comes with a set of four 15x8” aluminium slot wheels which I bought to complete the 70‘s look of the truck but never managed to have installed.

Metal jerry can painted in Wild Strawberry to match the trucks stripes.

Custom interior lock box for storage of tools, extra fluids, recovery gear etc. The box has two locking compartments which are particularly useful for securing gear when the hardtop is removed.

The truck was equipped with air conditioning and the York compressor is still installed. The setup will be included in sale and it worked well when it was removed.

The truck will come with a box of misc.parts and bits that may be useful including original gauges, factory air cleaner, extra wiring harness, factory radio, etc. The new owner can decide whether to keep or toss them.

In the end the pictures will tell most of the story but please feel free to email any questions. More than anything, this truck just needs to be driven and enjoyed.

And now for the standard boilerplate disclaimers:

The truck is in great shape but it is also a 36 year old truck therefore there is no warranty expressed or implied.

The winning bidder must contact me within 24hrs and provide a $1000(US) non-refundable deposit (unless alternate arrangements are made). The deposit can be made using PayPal. The remaining balance is due within 7 days and must be paid by bank draft/ cashiers check/ certified cheque etc. Paypal may be an option but we will have to discuss fee sharing. Once again I can be flexible but please contact me to discuss. If no contact is made, I reserve the right to re-list the truck within 48hrs, report the offending bidder to eBay and post negative feedback.

I have endeavoured to be completely truthful and accurate in this listing but mistakes can be made. I reserve the right to make changes to the listing at any time. Also, this vehicle is for sale locally therefore I reserve the right to end the auction early.

Thank you for looking.

Wow! I hope it finds a proper home. Having owned a '77 Scout Terra pickup (my first 4x4, wish I still had that one), a '78 Scout II, a 1961 pickup I think I qualify as an International fan :)

The last one, the '78 Scout, was very clean (sold several years ago) and was my wife's ride. She liked it, but the 9-MPG was a bit rough at the time and it needed carb and cooling work I didn't feel like messing with.

I told her about your Scout, the first words out of her mouth were "Is it blue?" (her favorite color)... I told her it was, appears very nicely done... She asked "how much". I told her not sure, but maybe ???, then showed her the pics... She said almost too nice to put the dogs in the back (why we want another truck/SUV for occasional use) ☺ ☺

I like the truck and loving build, I would love to see it go to a nice ExPo person :)

This Scout was my first 4x4 as well, great little truck. (I can hardly believe that I have owned it for 12 years now) It was much easier to drive and more comfortable (with AC and power steering) than the Series Land Rover that replaced it. I would not worry about putting dogs in the back however, I made sure that the rear carpet was removable so I could throw gear in the back and the original rubber matting is still in place. As you know, the back seat folds forward to keep messy paws off it so all would be well.

I am still quite fond of the truck but the restoration has been going on for a long time so when I suggested to my wife that we keep it and get a Conqueror trailer to go with it and sell the Dormobile she was less than impressed. What is the saying?, too many project vehicles broke the camel's back or something like that.

Truck has been sold to a local IH fan. Posted it on Kijiji (like Craigslist) and had a reponse by the next morning. A viewing, a test drive and cheque later it was on its way down the road. A bit sad to see it go but it is going to a good home and I even get visitation rights so not a bad deal. Thanks to everyone for looking.
