DP Review just posted their review of Nikon's new APS-C DSLR, the D7100. The 7100 shares many features with Nikon's top of the line full frame DSLRs, including a 24 megapixel sensor and 51 point autofocus, at a price that's thousands less. The internals are so good that DP Review recommends using Nikon's high end prime and zoom lenses with this camera body. (My opinion: Most APS-C cameras can't do justice to high end lenses, so using them is mostly a waste of money.)

DP Review's conclusion: The D7100 "comfortably outpac(es) its direct competitors from Canon, Sony and Pentax...easily earns our highest honor, the Gold Award."

I still have a hard time thinking of this as the top APS-C in the lineup. When you figure the build quality and buffer of the D300s it makes this seem like a practical joke.

As for using high end glass on a crop sensor. there are two ways to look at this IMO. First You buy the APS-C and never ever ever plan to go to a FX format. ok so you buy the DX equiv like the 17-55 2.8 or the 1.8 primes 35/50/85 and maybe add in the 10.5 or 11-16 by Tokina. I think many of us can agree that having fast glass is better than having kit lenses or anythingthat has a-5.6 added to any number after f ?!?! So what do we have for telephoto in DX? Pretty much crap. so your still looking at jumping into the FX lenses for good telephoto glass like the 70-200, 300, or above.

On the other hand if by chance there is a slight possibility that you may fall into a full frame camera down the road, well now you just bought all that DX glass that is not going to serve you very well on a full frame camera. I tend to look at it like this. Camera bodies come and go, specially in the digital age where Nikon release 3 FF cameras in one year. Glass on the other hand is forever as long as you take care of it. Buy good Fx glass now, never have a regret. Can't say the same with Dx glass because you really never know what tomorrow is going to bring.

Nikon D7100, Gave this 5 stars because I couldn't give 4.5 stars and think it deserves more than 4. I am not a professional by any means, just a hobby-amateur photographer who wants decent quality photos. I am also not a pixel counter or zoom in umpteen % like others seem to do. I like some control to learn and further my ability but also appreciate the auto/scene modes. That said, this is an excellent camera and in my opinion a good value given the build with weather sealing. I chose the body only and tested it so far with the 16-85mm lens I already have. The few tests I have done have produced excellent images but I have not enough video yet.
