Because this is a lifting winch, utilized in the recovery mode, it is rated to lift the load, hold the load in the air (also known as "brake" the load), and lower the loaded weight. And being hydraulic, it will pull all day long. It also has a valve to keep it from pulling past the limit of the cable or components, so you don't have to worry about damaging it. Though I've pulled a highway tractor out of the ditch with it, and didn't come close to its limit.

This Unimog is a rescue vehicle, thus, the winch is an integral part of the truck, its designed for it, so they work well together. The winch sits far back so the entire weight of the truck is available for heavy pulls. The truck also has the 4wheel parking brake, that locks all 6 calipers, combined with the wheel chocks, it turns the Unimog into a hell of an anchor.

Also, because the winch is mounted underneath, there's a cable brake at the front of the truck, should the cable somehow come off the drum, this brake will act like a chinese finger trap (or, for those familiar, a rope seal tool), and actually clamp down on the cable, preventing the load (or the Unimog) from sliding back down.

Another neat feature is the pressure roller. The pressure roller maintains pressure on the cable as it is being spooled in. It is a nice simple, effective way of being sure the rope is laying properly and not turning into a rats nest at the back of the truckRoller Springs.JPGDSCN4267.JPG

Those pictures are of the old cable, the Unimog has brand new, 6x36 1/2" winch cable fitted, and the original end crimped back on, like I said, I try my best to keep it as original as it came, right down to the winch cable end.

Also, Werner, the manufacture of the winch, still sells all the parts for this winch, even this many years later, and were very forthcoming with information when I asked about servicing it, they sent me all the technical diagrams, technical information, and were just in gerneral, awesome to deal with. If you wern't aware, Werner and Unimog work very closely together to develop winch systems for Unimogs, and are considered by many to be "the" winch for a Unimog.

The winch also has a drag brake on the back, you can adjust how hard it is to pull the cable out, I like to keep it fairly taught, that keeps the cable nice and smooth when pulling out (ie, it doesn't drop under the truck) And the winch was just recently fully serviced, and the front fairlead as well.

The front fairlead (or propeller roller) is actually a very expensive unit. It consists of two solid steel rollers, and two pulleys, allowing sideways pulls at full load up to 25degree's, and lighter pulls, almost 90degrees if needed. Here's some shots when I took it off to re-grease it (has a zerk right on top, but I wanted to get all the old grease out), and repaint it, you can see in the one picture, the solid steel rollers are not yet installed (I was waiting for the torque specification for the bolts from Werner, as well as some locktite) and in the second, it all put back together. (EDIT: The pictures I see are reversed, 1st one is all back together, second one, is with the front rollers removed during repaint)
