North Sonora, Mexico - October 6-8

This is being centered around a stomp to Puerto Penasco to see Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers at "Circus Mexicus." It's supposed to be one wild celebration of life through song and drink.

But on Sunday October 15, I'm planning on driving to Caborca and cross back into the Motherland at Sasabe. I want to see some sites at Tubutama and Oquitoa (between Caborca/Sonoyta), as I understand there are some old missions and cool things to see there. Can anyone verify?

Since I no longer trust any map of Mexico, is there a direct route from Penasco to Caborca, or do I have to backtrack to Sonoyta on Mex 8?

Mexico veterans: would you happen to have any advice, maps, or suggestions to share?

Mark congratulations, you will be doing almost the same area that I am presently planning, however I will be going into Mexico thru Sasave down to Caborca, then continue down to El Desemboque make a short cut thru Ejido Gen. Alvaro Obregon up to Puertp Penasco.
I saw a documentary on The Desert Speaks and would like to explore the Missions around Caborca, seems like it would be dirt road fron Sasave to Caborca, then I will be on pavement all the way to El Desemboque were I will be taking a short cut thru some deep sand ( should be fun ) then I will be hitting the pavement again in a very narrow road to Puerto Penasco( this area has many Esteros ) almost no traffic. I will be continue on to El Pinacate a great area to explore with many craters.

Mark, there is a direct route to Caborca from Penasco. When you get into town, turn left at the police station and that road will take you to Caborca. I have not travelled it in years, but it was not any different than any other Mexican highway, and I don't think it has changed much.

They put a huge resort on the road from Penasco to Caborca about 20 miles SE of Penasco. The Mayan Palace, At the first round about before Penasco take the road to Caborca and you will bypass Penasco, you will see signs for The Mayan Palace and Caborca.

You can also turn left at the police station in Penasco and mentioned above.

Tons of newer homes and old cabins along the beach SE of Penasco, you can not see them from the Highway.

And do not forget to stop by Santo Tomas, these are great beaches and i would stop, i was looking for some pictures of the road, however I could not find them in my computer. The road is very narrow and it is not like the regular hwy from Sonoita to Puerto Penasco.:gunt:

Last trip I picked up a very good Mexico atlas...in Mexico...which is in Spanish, but is nonetheless easy to read, I'll check out your route tonight and let you know if it's any good...I could send or fax you maps...

This would be fantastic. I'd be interested to see what your maps look like compared to mine. I've found them to be highly suspicious; I got into trouble by just trusting my maps. Send 'em on down, though! Would love to cross reference.

Oh yes! Sorry about that. I should have confirmed. Those scans are right off of one of the maps I have -- and it's quite inaccurate at times. I appreciate your contribution regardless! If you are trusting that map, be ye warned.....

Well I have used them before, and yes i have travel from Puerto Penasco to Caborca even before they made it a free zone, there used to have a check point almost half way thru, and it used to be a small dirt road, however they pave the path and now it is in good condition. Be warn it is narrow! You will be able to travel this road, and will save you some time.Here is one of the pictures I found an Estero by Bahia san Jorge. This is from Penasco to Caborca hwy past the Mayan Resort.

I've found that the GuiaRoji maps are generally pretty good. Not infallible though, just pretty good.

I always find ways to find my way around, maps are good, however they are not always very accurate, so that is why I mention before maps are fairly accurate.
