Not for USA: 3.0L diesel for LR3

Tata, the Indian company that owns Jaguar and Land Rover, just announced that they plan to use a new 3.0L twin turbodiesel in the new LR3 (formerly Discovery) and Range Rover Sport models. In top tune, the diesel produces 272 hp and 420 lb-ft.

That's good news for Land Rover fans everywhere except in North America. :(

What else is new... The 2.7L V6 they've had for a while is quite the little hot rod. The 3.6L V8 in the Range Rover/Range Rover Sport even more so! 271hp @ 4000rpm, 472 lb/ft @ 2000rpm. I'm drooling twice as much over these motors now, after watching the Dakar rally highlights. Hearing those ultra-built high horsepower Euro diesels power through the sand gives me proverbial wood.

Perhaps Tata will figure out a way and reintroduce the Defender into the US. Instead of having a range that is too top heavy in price, sell back-to-basics models that people can afford. Selling more in volume at reasonable prices may help then increase profits.

I read somewhere that Ford filed patents, or something of the sort, on an airbag conversion system for a 4x4. Ala defender.

Ah come on! Every new car sold in the US today has to have air bags already anyways. We don't need more patents stifling innovation/advancement. Besides, no one else makes a Defender so that particular patent may not protect much anyways.

Boo! When are we going to get diesels!?

Many auto companies that were planning on releasing diesels in the US in 2010 have canceled plans to release them here. They will release them in Europe of course. As usual, we get the short end of the stick.

Recent cancellation:
Nissan North American canceled their plans for the release of the Maxima Diesel.

A Legacy wagon or Outback wagon diesel would of been a great touring car.

On top of that, Subaru of America does not offer the Legacy in wagon form anymore. :(

Alas, the US probably won't receive a Defender till the model is completely updated and it will no longer be the same vehicle. Think of the FJ60/62 morphing into the FJ80
