OBX Vacation

Not really an expedition, per se - but in progress nevertheless. I am composing this post, and those that follow from a beach house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, near Corolla.

It was a 400 mile, uneventful drive from Lancaster to the Outer Banks. Jen, Cole, and myself were the first members of my family to arrive. After settling in, we took a quick stroll to the beach, and enjoyed dinner at the Tomato Patch italian restaurant. We then played a game of Scattergories with my sister's family - and I ended the night with a luxurious soak in the hot tub, under a starry sky.

I miss OBX too! That looks like a rough life. The beach is so crowded this time of year!

Smiley request: We need one that looks green and envious for those of us that have to live vicariously through others most of the time!

Family went to the beach while I took the Cherokee and drove up the beach to the state line. I also explored some of the back roads of Corova, and investigated some waypoints that Jim gave me. One of the most interesting destinations was Luark Hill, known as Penny Hill by the locals. This is (or possibly was) the second largest dune in North Carolina, and there is supposedly a house under the sand.

After that, I picked up sun screen for the family at Wings. Then went back to the house and relaxed in the hot tub for a while. My parents finally arrived. We enjoyed seafood pasta for dinner, and a game of Taboo before bed.

We were going to sit on the beach, but the wind picked up and a cold front rolled in very quickly - pretty much while we were eating breakfast. So we drove up the beach a little again to let Cole play on Penny Hill. Jen also thought the hill was really cool.

I aired down the day before, but since we weren't traveling in the sand very far, I opted not to this time. I was impressed by the difference airing down made, as we nearly got stuck at street psi. I can count the times I've driven in soft sand on one hand.

After that, we went back to the house for some sandwiches. I did more time in the hot tub that I've been taking full advantage of while we are here. Saw someone kite boarding, so we walked down to the beach to check it out. That is one water sport I would love to try! Then for dinner, we went to the Sunset Grille in Duck.

We concluded the day with another walk on the beach, some hot tub, and finally some sofa time. Having a great time!

oh man... I can smell the ocean and hear the waves.

Not many places left in the US that you can drive on the sand near the ocean...

Sounds like another perfect day in OBX

Any day on the beach is a perfect day.

Chris, if you're not too far in town, air down. Your beach buggy will appreciate it. I've driven slowly into town on 20psi. I wouldn't drive to Duck that way, but through Corolla it's not bad, speed limits are low, drive careful.
Looks like you guys are having a fabulous time. How's the water? How were the backroads? Did you check out the wreck? at False Cape?

Aside from the breathtaking seashore and the food talk making me hungry, what's the story on the house? That joint is kick-ass! Family summer house? A rental? What a beautiful place.

Continue to enjoy and keep the shots coming. Thanks.

Very Jealous!!

I've never driven up to the VA line before - how long did it take you to get there??

Oh - and since you obviously like food with a little kick - if you get far enough south to get to Kitty Hawk - try out the High Cotton BBQ joint - by far the best BBQ on the island! I bought a bottle of sauce to take home with me.

Oh, man - I can't wait to go back. It really is great off season - even in winter - when there is nobody down there.

We still need to get a trip to Rausch or something together when you get back - I've got a couple of Xterra guys by me that will go do the green trails just about anytime - I just have to find a time that works for everyone.

More pics! Have you headed down to Ocracoke yet??

This was a particularly lazy day. We sat on the beach in the morning, which was nice, but there was a chill in the air. I was even a little cold with a light jacket on. The temperature wasn't low enough to deter the kids and the sunbathers though.

After lunch, I spent some time in the hot tub while the rest of my family congregated in the patio area. Didn't feel so well after that - possibly too much sun, alcohol, hot tub, allergies, sinuses, or a combination of them all ... so I did some sofa time. I just drank water and took Alleve, and eventually felt better.

We had burgers, hot dogs, and corn for dinner - spent some time on the computer doing nerdly things. Downloaded the season finale of Heroes that I missed on Monday night, and Jen and I watched it in bed. Very romantic.

Only took seven pictures, which just goes to show how lazy Tuesday really was! You're going to have to settle for a picture of the boy for now.

:Astrologist: I think you need to work a bit more on that lazy thing...

...a bucket, shovel and the beach I remember it well.

If there is anything better on the OBX, than seeing the wild horses (and maybe a shrimp burger), I'm not aware of it.

You're making this Tarheel native, pine for home. Take care of those allergies and enjoy the lazy daze....:sunny:
