Off-Road Battery's

since i have added a winch and some other stuff.

i think a new battery would be good.

i've heard a lot of bad things about Optima's, i'm thinking about getting a gel battery.

does anyone have any experience with these.

when i was surveying we used a small 12V wheel chair gel battery.

it worked great on our GPS equipment, it would hold a charge all day long.

These are considered the thing to run these days:

Pricing is high (at least locally) but I have yet to hear a bad thing about them.

What's nice about them is that you can get the same CCA and such as your existing battery in smaller package. They are also a true sealed battery.

I'll go this route when the time comes.

I would recommend calling Greg, at Lubrication Specialists, who sells the Discover battery. Their DryCell technology batteries have an even greater reserve than the typical lifeline or Deka, usually about 5% more. I just picked-up a group 24 (EV24a-a) for the Land Rover Discovery, and it has an 84 ah reserve (20hr), where an Optima has only 55 ah reserve for the same size. This battery has enough capacity where I do not intend to run a dual battery system in the Disco. Just this 84ah unit, a low voltage disconnect for the house systems and a pair of rollable solar panels.

I ran a Optima yellow top for three years (two year warranty at the time:mad:). It was good for use with my winch and all the accessories I hooked up to it till it started to die. I replaced it with an acid Duralast yellow top. So far so good. Easier to charge then the gel batteries and comes with a 7 year warranty.:luxhello: .

I just put one in my Cherokee and moved my yellow top into my trailer. I was on my second yellow top, having the first one fail in 10 months. I needed a new battery for the trailer so it made sense to upgrade the Cherokee since the Platinum's seem to get good reviews and put the yellow top into the trailer, which isn't as critical.

Nice thing is there are Sear's all over the country so if you had a problem, it would be easier to find one that could replace it. That was the sucky part about the Optima, I had to take it back to the place I bought it, which luckily I had the problems BEFORE (like the day before) we left on our trip. Had it done it on the road, I would have spent money on a new battery and been SOL on the Optima.

Good luck on your choice.

Timely thread since my Optima Red Top is starting to die on me. Nice looking specs on the Discover battery. Now to figure out if they have a group 34 with reversed terminals for the 4Runner.

I am sure they do. Just give Gary a call. He is a good man, and very responsive.
