Oil light... Check Engine... Low idle

Hi all,

So I picked up my first Montero. A 91 Montero RS. Love this thing. I took it on it's first long voyage today, to the junkyard funny enough. Truck drove amazing. The check engine light popped on momentarily about an hour into the drive, when I stopped and got gas it went off. When I left the junkyard it came on and stayed on. I also noticed at this point that when I pulled up to stop lights or stop signs the truck idled really low. Maybe 400 close to turning off, really.

So with that said, it idled SUPER low when stopped. Then the oil light would flicker, but if I pushed the gas pedal to bring the idle up a little it would disappear. The oil light never came on when driving, only when idling.

Any thoughts? Any help would be AMAZING!

Thanks

You could try checking & cleaning your throttle body. There are small air passages & galleries that get clogged up and can affect the idle.

If you have an oil cooler I'd check to make sure it is working correctly. If your oil is heating up and running thin you will experience low oil pressure at idle. You can also get the same results if you are running the wrong grade oil.

I just recently cleaned my throttle body intake, and the idle air controller and my Monty ran much better. I still had to adjust the idle speed manually just a bit though. Cost me $8 for the can of Throttle Body cleaner. Best repair so far!

Hey all... Thank you so much for the advice. Keep it coming! Always good to hear what people have done. I flushed the coolant and did a nice ole oil change today. Started greasing some of the chassis, but the rain came and I had to stop.
