What is the oil capacity of the OM 366 engine?
What oil are you using? synthetic? conventional?

Depends on the application. In the Unimog 15-17 liters. Other configurations can have multiple oil coolers, filters, and larger/smaller pans.

Also check your manual. The Unimog oil level must be checked immediately after running the engine. Otherwise a false reading is given by runback from the oil coolers.

We have dragged our 366 for months of -30 Celsius in Canada to +50 of central American summer. The engine started at temperatures as low as -40, we have no cold start assist/glow plugs - it always starts. The last oil change at 25,000 km of dust, cold, bad fuel etc it had used 1 liter and the oil was in good condition. I think this is only possible as we use fully synthetic 5w-40, mineral oil would struggle, but synthetic is expensive so no point if you drive in moderate conditions.
