OME rear spring extra leaf shock?

I added an extra OME spring to my leaf pack in anticipation of a topper/rack, rear tire carrier bumper, etc, and the guys at the shop told me that the OME rear shocks that are matched to the Dakar pack are too short and limit down travel- limiting the articulation pretty significantly. That will improve with the weight but it was limited before the added leaf. Anyone have experience with this setup? Different shock ideas?

Yes; they are correct. I experienced the same issue in March 2009. Swapped OME N85 shocks for N76. Problem solved...

Thanks for the reply. Mine is a 2006 with the n182 rear shocks- I wonder if there is an OME shock I can upgrade to? And ideas?

Call Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters - he's the OME parts guru around these parts ;)

Left him a message, thanks!

I haven't had any issues whatsoever with this setup so it came as a suprise knowing these are a matched shock. The Dakar pack gave me at least 3" if not 4" of lift and there is zero sag after 2 years on them being on so with the added leaf the shock issue isn't a crazy one knowing the added leaf gave me another 1/2" or so. I'll wait until the Snugtop, Front runner rack and CBI rear tire carrier bumper is added to see how much that 500# or so sags it!

I run Dakar heavy equivalents in that I added one leaf to a medium pack (total of 7). I also run N85 rear shocks. Perfect for the intended load, a bit bouncy daily. It would be nice to have two setting on the shocks sorta like a simple Rancho for a less than full cargo load. I can live with the stiff suspension but it would be nice to increase the damping a bit. In any case, the shop is right heavy shock + heavy spring = joy.

Not so much a heavy spring as is the issue of travel. With the lift of the AAL the N85 only allowed an inch of travel thus limiting articulation. The N76 gave over 3 inches of travel hence the articulation of my pictures from the above post. You don't change the shock it will end up limiting how much your leaf springs are able to flex.

Kurt will be able to help you out with a solution for your 2006.

Good luck!

Gotcha. Must be down travel since my springs already go up into recurve enough with OME shocks that I've fatigued and broken leafs. Also heavy Dakars on my truck only ended up at about 2" of lift.

The All-Pro / Fox single-adjustable rear shocks are 25.75" extended, 9.5" travel. I have them with my Dakars with the HD leaf, and it's a good match. There's 1/4" unused travel on the shaft including big bottom-out hits, and a little leftover travel at full droop. On my truck anyway; YMMV.
