Open Source GPS/TOPO Software

I've been playing around with my old DeLORME Earthmate GPS LT-20 USB receiver and I'm trying to find software that will work with it. The old DeLORME software that came with the unit only works with streets and has no offroad support at all. I'm hoping to find an open source software to use but I'm not against buying something, I just prefer to support open source when possible! ;)

Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to give TopoFusion a try on the way home this afternoon but that's the only one I've found so far.

I just started playing with Viking yesterday - good for Windows and Linux. Haven't hooked my delorme up to linux yet but there is a Windows application from Delorme that creates a virtual serial port and puts nmea data thru it. Theoretically that would make it work with anything that reads serial output including Viking.

You might look around at http://freegis.org has they have some stuff listed. The OS stuff that has got my attention in times past was gpsdrive, xastir, and some others. Remember google earth can do gps. The data just needs to be cached locally or use some .kmz files.

There are programs out there that can take several topo maps or imagery and create a kmz file for offline google earth use.

There's some more that I can't quite remember...

Personally I try to avoid data lock-in, but in many cases due to licenses you cant avoid it.

But for the US and Canada, the topo maps are easily found (as well as other GIS data).
