Outback TX-1's with 255/85's

I'm going to be picking up a '98 4Runner and the first thing it's going to need is new tires.

So I want to go with the 255/85R16 size again like I had on my old '98. I just don't know how wide of a wheel I need for this size tire?

With the Outback TX-1's I have an option of 7" or 8" wide. IIRC, the stock wheels are 7" wide? So which size do I need?

My wheels are stock 7inch wide. I haven't had any issue. I have aired down as far as 18 psi

I think either wheel width could work for you, but the 7" is ideal if you have the choice. I had 16x7 rims made for my FJ40 with 255/85/16 Maxxis Bighorns.

Either will work. The 7 inch rims will pull the sidewalls in just a bit and provide better protection on rough terrain, as well as allow for lower air pressure without slippage than the 8 inch would. Your choice. For road work, the 8 inch would provide a bit better handling because of slightly better control over sidewall roll. For general off road work, narrower rims are a better choice in my experience.

I agree it all the posts regarding wheel width. I currently run 7.5" TRD wheels but that is the width they come in so I have no choice if I want to run these wheels (and I do).

I have run many sets of 255/85, and have used 7, 7.5, and 8-inch wheels. The eights were the stock Jeep Moab wheels on an LJ Rubicon and never gave me a problem. If I was picking a wheel specifically for use with 255/85 I would choose sevens for all the reasons mentioned. If I thought I might run 285/75s later then 8-inch wheels would allow more flexibility in the future.
