overhead console?

I am thinking about putting an overhead console in my TJ and wanted some advice from anyone who has one. I primarily want it for a place to mount my CB and for some lights and switches. My question is does it bug you? I mean does it get in the way etc? It would seem that the CB mike might be cumbersome and in the way hanging down, but I don't know, I have never ridden in a jeep with one.

Any advice?

Here's the setup in my JK - it doesn't get in the way at all.

I had a buddy that wired the mike plug into the dash, but had the radios in the overhead console. I think I'll do that when I get around to putting a console in.

I had one of the Tuffy overhead consoles in my TJ for a year or two. It was "OK". I had a CB in one slot, the 2 meter radio in the other. It was difficult to see the radio in the rear slot when you needed to adjust anything (volume, frequency, etc). It served the purpose, but when I put a roll cage in the jeep, the console didn't fit any more...so now it is collecting dust in the garage.

BTW, it's for sale. See the thread in the equipment sales section...

TJ overhead cb

I have my CB in a similar location between my front rollcage tubes.
I have found the rearveiw mirror sight line is skimming under the CB. A hanging Mic moving on the road does catch your eye, I wrap cord around the top (on the trail it is fine), I hang my Mic on a Trucker clip. I like the location because speaker performance is great, also you can reach the Mic and radio so easily with no distraction just by feel, I rarely look at it.

I did move my CB forward after reading about how far your neck streches upon a hard impact, (I also sprung for the high dollar rollbar padding).

The only other issue is water with no top up, I was looking at marine radio boxes but have not addressed it yet.

RobB, I love the re-wired mike idea. My biggest concern was the dangling mike cord while off road, I could see it driving me CRAZY.

Poison Spyder trail cage

I purchased a posion spyder trail cage with two sport bars up front. It easily lent to placing a 2" wide steel strap between the bars that readily accepted my CB. I mounted the mic-tab on the passenger side sport bar and wrap the cord over the CB, passenger sport bar and up to the tab-hence minimal dangle. I use roll-bar foam padding from Don's Hot Rod Shop (Summit Racing carries it as well). Made for a very OME looking application.

I took mine out after the wife and I knocked our heads on the unit in rough areas, more than once. It was a handy place for the CB
