Overheating / Starting Issue

engine has no compression. They think it might be the head gasket and possibly more. Engine has 133,000 miles on it. Do I fix it, or just dump it / engine swap. Thoughts?

Find out exactly which cylinder lacks compression.

You can get a salvage 4.6l block for a grand. Change out the oil pump, water pump and headgaskets. On a hoist it's easy to do and a shop shouldn't charge a grand to do all that. Drop in the new motor, max another grand to remove the old and drop in the new.

If you price it out and get a deal you can do it all for 2.5-4k.

OK He said that he doesn't think there is compression in the entire engine. Best case he thinks it is a head gasket, worst case, and relatively likely he thinks the piston rings are torched from the over heating.

I bought the car cash for $3k so I don't have a note on it. It still sounds like a pretty good deal to just swap the engine. Or should I just junk it.

And since we are talking engine swaps, if I do go ahead do a go with the straight aluminum block or some other swap. I am new to the LR world and over from the Jeep world where non original engine swaps are common. If we are going to change what is the best case swap?

Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.

If the starter isn't cranking the engine then you won't have any compression. I've never seen an engine so bad there was zero compression in all cylinders.

Agree with Tom. Only seen a motor with zero compression twice. Both were track cars. Both threw pistons. Both had holes in the motors.

Get a second opinion or buy a compression tester. $30

It kind of makes you wonder whether this shop even checked the compression at all. How high was the temp gauge and how long was it that hot?

I agree I think he just guessed.

I don't know exactly how hot it was running when it happened. Sigh, I have to admit that I let me wife drive and woke up to the car overheating.

I called JC Rovers in CO and they thought that his initial thoughts are unfortunately possible and very likely.

found a local 96 Disco with 130k on it. For sale for $1100, Tranny is no good. Thinking of picking it up and moving my tranny over. Haven't decided, my offer $900.

Sounds like a good possibility. Much cheaper than a whole new motor, provided that the drivetrain on the new one is in good enough shape. Then you'll also have a parts vehicle. I just bought a non-running Disco with parts in mind, but it's in such good shape, better than mine, that I'm thinking about just fixing it and selling the other one, or using it for parts.

I have never changed a transmission myself. I am mechanical and smart but am not a mechanic. How hard a job is it? Should I try myself? JC Rovers wants at least a grand in labor.

A grand is pretty steep. Tranny swap isn't harder than a motor swap. Shop around or have a friend that has done it before help you. You will likely need a tranny Jack or can make the brace that LR recommends. PM Antichrist he has the LR specified diagram that shows you how to build one. There is also a diagram floating around here.
