Non current but to me, interesting and impressive.

With more interest in automobile touring, Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service pushed to develop a "National Park-to-Park Highway," one that would run through 11 states and connect 13 national parks.

A.J. Westgard was a surveyor and map maker and worked for the AAA as a pathfinder. He ran the Park to Park course alone then guided the actual tour. He had to drop out due to poor health.
