Pirelli Scorpion ATR

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR LT 265/75 for my D40 Nissan Navara. 235/85 size is also available. I'm getting the 265/75 for US$175 per tire. Any thoughts or insights?

It all depends on what you plan on using your truck for. Those tires rate high on places like tirerack but might not necessarily work for the terrain you will be driving on.

I have a set of the Cooper S/T in 265/75r16 that I picked up for $157 apiece from discount tire. I had them pricematch to unsertire.com. There are people on here that will swear by BFG Mud Terrain, BFG All Terrian and others. I just ordered a set of the Hankook Dynapro ATM for my parent's truck. Good luck with your decision.

I have a set of ATRs and wanted to give a quick review. I had these installed on my wife's Pathfinder that was used mostly on road with some light offroading thrown in occassionally, and they served that purpose very well. They are an excellent road oriented AT tire. They perform very well on pavement both wet and dry. They are quiet on road, track very well and seem to be holding up quite nicely. Have never had a problem with hydroplaning in deep rain or standing water.

Off road they perform pretty well considering that the tread is not very aggressive. They are solid performers on gravel or sand roads and and light trails, but mud or loose terrain will give them some trouble. I would say they are middle of the road as far as AT tires go for offroad use. If you spend alot of time offroad, then you will find that they will get overwhelmed pretty easily, and you would be better served with a more aggressive tire.

I have taken over that Pathfinder as my daily driver / trail rig and have added a small lift and plan to replace the ATRs with some more aggressive treads. Bottom line - the ATR is a great tire for the right user / conditions. I have also run a set of the Scorpion AT (not ATR) tires on a lifted Trooper and found those to be better suited for more trail use.

Mauricio, I have never been to Indonesia, however I spend a lot of time in the tropics both north and south of the equator and from what I have experienced I think you should be still looking at the Toyo MTs you were considering before. Better to have and not need, than need and not have. The fact that you are on this forum makes me think you will take your truck offroad and in the monsoon that means MUD.... Good luck whatever you choose.

Thanks for the tips. I've had the Scorpion ATRs now for over a year and 15,000 km. I've taken them on multi-week expeditions to Sumatra and Nusa Tenggara. For what they are, a relatively non-aggresive AT tread, they've been great. For my next expedition (Celebes/Sulawesi), in 2010, I intend to put MTs on it, most likely the Toyo OpenCountry.

No, I do not go on overland expeditions during the rainy season. The rain presents problems not only for wheel traction, but for other ancillary activities during these trips such as camping, hiking, mountain biking.

Here are the Scorpion ATRs out on an overland expedition in Sumba

Skip the Toyo's... For the money, there are far better Mud tires... that's just my .02 I know alot of people like them, but IMO if you're going to go for an MT for Expo use I'd get something that doesn't cost nearly 2X their competitors. Personaly I think that the Maxxis MT's are a steal not to mention they operform VERY well. Just something to consider.

Cheers

Some people need to learn how to read dates on posts... Obviously myself included. I just notices that the two posters in front of me were responding to a 16 month old question. Glad to hear the atrs are working out!
