Plain 99 Tacoma Build

Hey all!

I believe this is my first post, but I've been a long time lurker and have really enjoyed checking out all the builds and info here, especially on the older Toyota trucks. I've been lightly modifying my 99 Tacoma for the past couple of years, and thought maybe I should start a build myself.

I've been a Toyota guy since I got my license. Here's a brief history of my previous vehicles:

99 Sienna, family car given to me upon getting my license. At one point it had flame decals all along the side and two 12 inch subs lol. I always wanted a truck so ended up selling it.

99 4runner, 3 inch OME lift and some KC lights, downside was it was only 2wd, and I didn't really want an SUV.

85 Pickup, 22r, 4 speed. At the time that I had the 4runner I was working at a Japanese auto shop, and this truck had been parked in a far corner of the lot. I asked about it, and ended up buying it for 300 bucks. After some fiddling with the carb and a new intake gasket, we got it running and it eventually became my daily driver and work truck. Best vehicle I've had to date and regret selling it all the time. Learned how to work on cars with that truck.

I was driving the truck more and more and the 4runner less and less, so I sold it. Found what I thought was a deal on this 40, sank a bunch of money and into it. It was cool, but plans changed and it too was sold. The picture of the pickup towing it isn't really legit, that was just to back it into the lot because we didn't have access to the tow rig anymore.

And finally the Tacoma. Around that time I joined AmeriCorps, and spent a year traveling around the midwest doing that. I was moving to Iowa from Georgia, and needed a more reliable vehicle than the pickup, which was leaking about a quart of oil every week at that point. I found it for a smoking deal in South Carolina. Looked awful, but turned out to be in pretty decent shape mechanically. Basically stole it from the dealer, as they were about to send it to auction at wholesale anyway. Heres how it looked then:

And a roughly up-to-date photo:

It's pretty simple, super functionally, takes me everywhere I need to go and back. Serves it's purpose well.

Truck is a V6, 5 speed, SR5 4x4. The previous owner had pretty much beat the hell out of the body. Apparently he was an engineer, but that didn't seem to translate to any sort of real life application. The top that was on it was clearly for another truck, and the third brake light had been removed to make it fit. To keep water from getting in, he had attempted to cover the hole with some sort of mesh tape and silicone. The entire shell was also made watertight with what appeared to be bathroom caulk. It was a huge pita to remove, and left white streaks all over the bed where it had run down after coming into contact with water. One of the taillights was also being held together with duct tape. Sold the shell for like $75, fixed the brake lights, rattle canned the wheels, and got some 31 duratracs. Wish I had gone with 33s, but oh well. Next time.

Don't have any pictures, but I lifted it mildly with 5100s up front and a 1.5" daystar shackle in back. I've since replaced the flattened leaf springs and will be adding an aal as well when I get a chance. When I was in Iowa, I was looking for a camper shell to keep my stuff out of the snow. Found this A.R.E. off a Colorado. Has a side tool box, and the rack is great. The guy was super nice, helped me install it, and wouldn't even take his full asking price. Ended up getting it for $60!

Moved back to Georgia and decided to fix the bent and rusty stock bumper. Didn't have a ton of cash, but I did have some tools, so I got some tube and built my own. It's nothing fancy and certainly not professional but it does the job. That's really the theme of this whole build.

Found some brand new 4x siders for a 3rd gen pickup on craigslist. I had to cut the legs down to mount them, but well worth it.

Retrofitted headlights

Got these cheap generic HIDs, didn't realize just how big 7" lights are. The geometry of the bumper required that I cut off the hoop to fit them. Decided I didn't like them in the end anyway, wish I hadn't cut the hoop.

And that's basically where it's at now. I've done a lot of maintenance lately, and am now living and going to school in Indiana. If anyone knows of any cool spots to check out near the Indiana/Ohio border, and could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it! Future plans are pretty flexible, but I'd eventually like to maybe retrofit an e locker or get a detroit, and maybe one day build a rear bumper as well.

Thanks for checking it out!

Good flow through this build. It's neat to see the evolution of vehicles up until the one people are driving... the OG Van was pretty cool! Sub'd.
