Pop up campers

New guy here... Just got done reading a long thread... I'm jealous of some of these trailers.

Anybody do mods to, or have experience with pop-up campers in the wild?

I've been "camping" is a lot of interesting places over the years.

My camping trips now are limited, as I sleep in the camper shell of my truck. Been off roading a long time, just getting into back woods expedition travel. Happy with the truck so far. She's big, but if she fits, she gets me there. I really want to get into this overland expedition hobby, but I only have one trailer...

Not really "trail ready".

I suppose I could use it, but looking to get a dedicated trailer or a Flip Pack. Seems a large percentage of you expedition guys are out west in dry areas. We live in Indiana, and had a bad experience with a rain storm a couple years back. (I thought it was funny) Wife wants something more substantial.

Anybody do mods to, or have experience with pop-up campers in the wild? My truck is too big for tight trails anyhow. Can't seem to get the wife into the whole "tent" idea. Anyhow, she wants a trailer with a solid floor and roof. I'm not wanting to put up a fight if it will get her out of the house. One issue we have is I'm partially disabled (I walk with a cane). I love the idea of the Flip Pack, and the roof top tents, but we both are big people. I'm 6'1" 265#, the wife is shorter, but heavier. Not sure up high is best for us.

1. Welcome aboard..

2. Thank you for your service...

3. You get out there and camp with any damn equipment you want..there is no right or wrong. That being said if you have some skill sets and tools, well you can convert older military trailers, like some us...you can convert a ready made trailer to be a bit more off road friendly...or you can start form scratch.

That's one sweet truck...you just have to think about what your needs vs. cost vs. how many nights out you want to go. Sometimes it's a bit cheaper to go to a 5 star hotel in Boca Rutan then it is to go through the efforts of building one up....

don't ask me how I know...:ylsmoke:

Great looking truck.

I've really warmed up to the idea of a hard sided trailer like a Casita style trailer.

We currently have a Starcraft 11RT. Great idea marginally executed.

I also like the Flip Pac and something like a RTT on a frame on the back of the picup truck (I'm building a Jeep Comanche). These days leaning more to the RTT idea for the portability and less "fussiness" of the set up.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding an old pop up camper. They can be built to handle fire/forest service roads. They won't do any crazy rock crawling stuff. The link to my build is in my signature.

Here's a couple more

Jet noise is on here as well here's a link to his build thread

Atoyot's king daddy of all off road pop up builds here

You can see varying degree of skill (mine's on the lower end, Atoyot's on the higher end) and with each build comes varying levels of off road capability.

Feel free to PM with any questions. My wife also likes a hard floor and a hard roof.

PS Go Navy! :ylsmoke:

Bummer. Atoyot's thread is missing all the pictures. Looks interesting.

BUT...you are cutting yourself short! Very nice build!

What about starting out with something familiar?

a M101a2 or 1102 trailer with bows and cover?
