i search i saw one thread on a super winch on a bag, but nothing else. i have a vehicle over 8000 pound, i am looking for a recommendation for a portable winch. i just do not want to carry that weight around when i don't need it would rather turn that area where the winch go into a tool storage area. and i like the idea of being able to use it where is it is needed...... thanks:smiley_drive:

Add receivers to both ends and and mount the winch on a cradle. That is what I do :)

There's a rather extensive discussion here somewhere about portable winches, comparing the 3 higher quality ones. Search for Maasdam, Wyeth-scott and Tifor. You won't go wrong with any of those three.

Coming from a Jeep guy (My rigs are under 5K loaded), but isn't a receiver style winch hook up a bit on the light side for an 8K+ rig?

I know it would work for most situations, but I wonder about a serious stuck in the muck self recovery?

An 8K rig should have at minimum, a 12K winch. Just seems like an awful lot of load on a receiver pin, and receiver, if one was to end up using the full potential of the winch.

Just curious.

CST has some big trucks with removable winches. Twin receiver tube mounted. Rings mounted so that with the use of a pulley block you can double the line pull.

They were marked "28,000 lbs. Maximum".

Twin receivers, I can see that working on a larger rig.

Thanks for the info!

Looking at bumpers for our Jeep GC, found one that the winch bolts to the front like out in front. Looks like a flat bumper without the winch on it. Maybe something like that? A front receiver is lower and depending on what your stuck in, might be submerged. The bumper might at least not be. If you find something, let us know.

I have used a Warn M-85?? (old oil bath/gearbox style 8000# unit) for many years in a portable mode. It worked flawlessly. winched ALOT of logs, and material with it over the years. This is an ALL custom mount and bracket. IT went to the previous owner of my F-350 in the "bartering". The only picture I have is when it was in the bulkhead position of my old F-550. I used it in 2;1 and 3;1 Z-drag configuration without issue on a single reciever. That said I would like the "two point" ALOT better.
