I have just posted my actual camper under the trailer section here and we are currently developing a pickup bed model.

If you see our camper posting and yet have a trailer you already pull ATVs, Boats, or other things then you might be interested in our pickup camper model which is currently being developed. It would have a sleeping area the full size of the bed resting above the wheel wells so you would still have storage space from the wheel wells down the full size of the bed. It would be cab height so no additional wind drag would be present and a single door in the back same as on our campers that would allow access to the bed area. It would be light enough for 2 people to load and unload and therefore be easy to store and mount. Have same AC/heater option as the campers for optimum comfort and have tent option to attach to add a privacy room that could be heated and cooled as well. Fully insulated and as posh as you would want it to be.

We will develop a stand option so that it could be pulled and setup at a RV park or site and slept in which wouldn't tie up the pickup and make it available for travelling around without the camper mounted.

One of the ideas that has been bouncing around in my head that I always thought would work great is a teardrop mounted to a pickup.

It sounds like you are doing a more improved, better use of space version of that concept and I like it! Post some pics or even photoshops if you get the chance.

Here's a quick google sketchup I did of what the design will basically look like. The lip to rest on the truck sides is a little oversized in the drawing but you get the general idea of what it will look like.
