Powers steering cooler

On my last trip, one of the hoses of the power steering started leaking, so I created a 'bypass' by using a piece of hose that led to the cooler. So I don't use the cooler anymore, but do I really need it? everything seems to operate just fine and the fluid hasn't turned brown or anything....

I would fix it if it was mine.
If you get into a situation where your pump is working really hard (mud, aired down tires, etc...) I think you'll probably want it.

Please read this as non-sarcastic:

I can't believe Toyota put it on there unless it was required. That cooler and associated plumbing cost $$, and they wouldn't have included it unless it was needed.

I'm flying into Schiphol in a few days.
If you don't have a good parts source in Amsterdam the guy I use, John Hocker @ Sierra Toyota, can probably get whatever you need quickly.
More than happy to hand deliver Landcruiser parts :)

I was told the hoses aren't available as single parts but only as part of a kit including the cooler...probably ± €300,-
The hoses are 'pre-shaped' and cant be replaced with ordinary tubes. True?

I don't know.
Call John at Sierra Toyota he'll know.
(520)458-8880 and ask for parts, we're eight hours behind you.
He can give you the price as well.

I would use a cooler. Heat kills power steering pumps like it does transmissions. I have used ATF many a times as it is cheaper and it was all I had when before I rebuilt my PS pumps on both of my 80 series. That fluid gets very hot even during normal driving. When you are done driving around town stick your finger in the reservoir. It will burn you.

Fix it or even better yet put a bigger or another cooler on there. I've seen a couple of 80 series with those round coolers added to them.

Or even cheaper if you can put it in series. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13200/
